EDITORIAL COMMENT
U.
It makes you wonder
There's small doubt that members of
the Huron County Board of Education
will be hoping to avoid face to face con-
fro.gtation with the taxpayers of this
county this week. The word . is out.
- -- -EdOcation costs in Huron are going to
cost a bundle this year... and there is
every likelihood that citizens will, be
wanting answers frdm their local
trustees. '
It. is one thing to say ,the, education,
bgdget is up for 1974. It is quite another
thing to actually come to grips With the
• `_ realization that in the Town of Goderich,
for instance; ratepayers, will have to
raise $435,567 - $37,666 „more than 'the
$397,901 raised in Goderich last year.
What will that mean to the average
homeowner in" Goderich?u'• Qccordirig to
Town Administrator Harold Walls who
warns that it is still too early to be fac-
tual about- the actual increases to
Goderich ratepayers for educational pur-
poses, education hike could mean an
additional three to four mills. Or, in
terms„ which are still easier tc under-
, .stand, that could amount to from $9 to
extra on the average tax bill in the
municipality. ,.
And the, County of Huron budget is up.
Walls says that an additional $80,000 is
,requored for cotanty purposes represen-
ting an eight mill increase. Eigh ad -
,
a
ditional mills on the average tax bill
means about $24!
Taken together then, local ratepayers
could be paying an additional $36 on
their tax bills - and getting no increase
in municipal services at all.
And What about municipal services?
To hold the- line in Goderich. this year,
council will, have to drastically curtakl
planned programs. It is doubtful that -this
can be accomplished .- eaten if it was
wise,. which it probably isn't - and local
'taxes far municipal purposes will very
likely increase as well. We'll lust have to
wait and see what~ 'Fir -lance Chairman
Councillor Dave Gower can devise. •
Yes, costs are up all over. This fact
shouldn't be at all difficult for citizens to
understand. A simple trip torthe grocery
store reminds everyone, that it is costing
more for even life's staples. It is a mad;
mad treadmill which ' people will com-
'prehend even though they will not like it.
In the meantime, though, a little thing '
like high jumpers with the secondary
school tirack team leaping into improper
pits leaves people wondering V'vhere
education dollarsare going. Parents and
interested taxpayers mustbe puzzled •by
such small inadequacies in the face of
some of the .highest.tax billy ever paid in
Ofttarid.
