Charles Kalbfleisch, band-
master', of the Goderich
Laketown Band, -has written to
council asking for some finan-
cial assistance i to support the
band concerts ,at Harbor Park
this summer.
Considerablediscussion took
place on the` matter, led, off by
'Councillor Bill Clifford..,Clif--
ford told council it was his :un-
derstanding the financial
assistance was being 'requested
in lieu of caltect:' ns from the
crowd at thenconcert. He
said he'd like to see the•collec-

those collections added "a'bit.

"I don't think people mind
making a contribution for ep -
joyment," commented Clifford.
Clifford was supported . by;
another banal concert lover,
Councillor Leroy Harrison who
said he is in favor of the collec-
tions continuing., He said pic-
nickers in the park often stay
for the band concerts and
"make a day_ of it" Harrison
-said people. are notcompelled
to give, a donation and 'few

When Councillor Frank
Walkom said he'd like to see' a
financial sta°tement from the
•° bandbefore voting any
municipal funds to • it,
Deputy -reeve Stan. Profit said,
the Rec Board gets a" financial
statement -every year from the
band before making its annual
grant to the group. Profit in-
dicated this year's grant to the
band could be reduced.
The letter from Kalbfleisch
drew attention to
municipalities where .the band,
was supported ' 'through
municipal funds.
"We're .always hearing this
sort of thing," said Cokncillor
Eileen Palmer. "They do this
in .that town, they do that in
this town. Let .them. , ''Just
because they do it doesn't make
it right. We should retain some
of our distinctive qualities."

Strickland, it is understood',
would agree to pay up to $350
towards the cost of surveying
and legal fees if the members of
council concur with the offer. to
convey ,and exchange the
,properties..
The deal involves a portion
of Mary Street which is
"basically • tinused" according
to Strickland.
"I don't know why it's

Reeve Deb Shewfelt admitted
that in principle, the idea was
sound but he suggested• a plot
plan on the area by the town's
engineer.

Courytill,or Leroy *Harrison,
chairman of the Parks Division
of Council, has advised cbuncil
that the cost of trees for plan-
ting is up considerably this
year. He . recommended that
fewer but larger trees be pur-
chased since past experience
has shown that many of the
smaller trees • are ' easily
damaged and have to be
replaced.
Reeve Deb Shewfelt asked
about trees in planters op The
Square. He learned that this
has been given consideration
and a section of the Square
could have trees this summer,
budget permitting.
Councillor Harrison. said it
was his feeling that the local
businessmen should help the ,
town in this regard.
