The residents of Goderich are using, the .postal code at a.
rate better• than the national average,' Postmaster Mel Farn-
sworth said' today '. "and those who mail -through street
letter boxes are doing better,,than business houses". r
"Now that codes have beenintroduced'to the entire coun-
try,"all business address lists can be completely coded. This
isdone as -a free service by the Post Office", said Mr. Farn-
sworth.
The local postmaster said the national acceptance rate, -
Which was 24.4 percent in January .41974' - had increased
from 10 percent a year ago. He noted a steady increase in the
use of codes in local mail, but was concerned that business
and commercial houses (for whom the mechanization and
coding improvements havebeen mainly introduced) are slip-

groups, clubs, and businesses wh;p are notuusing the code yet.
Fib hoping that Goderich residents will be right out in front
in their use of the code." • •
"It's already' 17 months since coding was introduced to
Southwestern Ontario, and alinost before. we know it - the
machines being manufactured at Guelph will be 'installed '
and. working in major cities", -Mr. Farnsworth said.
"I'm .hoping that the mail leaving.Goderich will,'continue

Ontario Revenue' Minister
Arthur Meen has announced
that residents needing help in
claiming their Ontario ,tax
credits will be able to telephone
his Ministry during evenings
a,nd weekends 'throughout
a.
March and April
Mr. Meen said that the On-
tario Tax Credit Information
Centre will now be open from 8
a.m. until 9 p.m., Monday to,
Friday, and from 'noon until 5
p.m'. Saturdays and Sundays.
The Centre can be •reached,
free of charge, by dialing "O"
and asking the operator for
Zenith 8-2000.
"Our purpose is to provide
people with access to govern-
ment on these . important tax
credits at times most con-
venient to them", Mr. Meen
told the Legislature.
"As many people claim their
credits by completing a federal
income tax return during the
evening •or on. the weekend, it
Makes sense t9 have our staff
available to them at those
times", he explained.
Mr: Meen reported that the
tax credit counsel•litg staff has
already received well . over
23,000 telephone calls from
across Ontario since the Infor-
mation Centre was set up in
early January.
"I am most impressed by
'
these results. In:contavtipg the
Information Centre,, many
people have thanked us for
establishing this public service.
I intend, therefore, to broaden
its scope through :an evening
and weekend service", the
Minister commented.
The Ontario Tax Credit In-
formation., Centre was open
during weekends and evenings,
on a trial basis, for the past
weeks. n. More than . 800
residents, mostly from outside
Metro Toronto, telephoned bet-
ween". 6. p.m.. and 9 p.m. Mr,
Meen said the response during
the past' two weekends - a total
of 370 calls was disappointing.
'Clearly we need to advertise
the. service more 'extensively",
he added.
The Ontario tax credits the
Property Tax Credit, the. Sales
Tax Credit, and the Pensioner
Tax Credit - are claimed by
completing a federal income
tax return and the Ontario Tax
Credit form attached inside the
federal schedules.
The' tax credit program is'
designed to bring greater fair-
ness to the tax system by
providing rebates to ` in-
dividuals and families with the
greater financial need for relief
from taxation. The tax credits
are igearled to the claimant's in-
come.
The Information Centre can
only counsel on the Ontario tax
credits. Other income tax mat-
ters should be discussed with
the nearest federal district
taxation. office.
