DEAR fITOR
Dear Editor:
An estimated half billion
dollars lost in sales..which'nor-
ma lly4i)iould.be'channelled into
the economy of Canada.. This
statement was made 'by Mr.
Atkinson in reference to •the
delay in moving western grain
to an .export position:, ,.
'
Roy Atkinson, -president of
the National Farmers Union,
accused • the CPR of
deliberately playing a kind of -
Russian roulette with Canada's
national interests by not
moving grain in an attempt to
increase freight rates.
Mr. Atkinson ', identified 20
railway cars which sat loaded
for as "long as 80 days at a'
siding in Perdue, Saskat
'.c.hewan. In.. February a .request
to the Federal government to
deal with the" situation was
made by Mr. Atkinson. When
31 more cars were. discovered
MNn
loaded -and riot moved for six
weeks, a second request for ac-
tion was made -by -4 -NFU. Mr.
Marchand,- Minister of Tran-
. sport has now asked CP rail fo
a report and explanation of
trimming trees in the west
section, Everett Iviiddel,, of the
PUC told the Signal -Star on'
Monday.
- The cut branches are
removed by the town, taken to
a landfill site and .bur"ped, he
said:; . 11
Mr. Middel estimated the
.work will take , about three
weeks.
"59rne towns, don't, have a
tree prograde.'' he said.
Goderich does however, within
the benefits going to the public.'
With trees properly trimmed,
there is less chance of a branch
downing power; lines during a
,winter storm. ;
Mr. MacDonald' UMW a long pole to finish the job' he began with a chain saw. One...,
r. MacDonald's work climaxes as the branch he has cut -
crashes to the ground (staff photo)
The " $uns lost -their first
game to the Kitche" Knights
—
64• ' The Suns herr a 4-1
lead at tha.end,,nf two periods,
but the Knights were not to be
denied, scoring five goals in the
third period._.to..take.the win, ,...a
Larry Kelly scored twice for.
the Suns with Randy Graham
and Larry Boyce scoring one
each. Assists went to'John Huff
and Darrell,sgraham.
The Suns lost their second
game 5-3 , to Peterborough
Selects. -.The teams were tied
3-3 at 'the' end of two periods,
but again the third period
proved the undoing of the Suns.
The absence of two defencemen
from the'Suns line-up may have
been a factor but coach. Richard '.
Madge was not using this as an
excuse.
Larry Kelly, Randy Graham
and Larry Boyce again were
' the marksmen' for the Suns

'March is decision-making
__time for homeiardeners. And
the business of selecting small
fruifs for backyard gardens
should take account of those
that make first-rate homemade
jams and jellies.rt
"Sttawbers are the easiest
to handle," says Burke
McNeill, horticulturist with the
14 0atario ministry of agriculture_
and food. "They can be grown
i.n%be4s, in hills and -have even
been grown in wooden barrels
with :holes in the sides," '
Select a well -drained site,
provide' plenty of water; and
disease and insect control
during the fruiting season, and
therer will, be lots of high-
. quality fruit to preserve.
Raspberries are also easily
grown, but they require more
- garden space.• They need an-
nual removal of old fruiting
canes and control' of suckers. -If
thiw is done, raspberries can be
confined to a reasonably small
,,,,area and will produce plenty of
fruit, for raspberry jam.
Red, 'black' or white currants
r` also 'make excellent jelly or
jam• They are highly suscep-
r tible to insect damage,
: however, and need a `" good
spray program from the time
-the fruit starts to develop until
'harvest time, to provide, effec-
tive control'. Just two currant
plants . will gr'csw enough. fruit
for several jars of jam or jelly.
delays.'
CP has not yet - provided
'proof that moving grain is un-
profitable, at the present crows
nest rates.
