July 19 Between 30 and 40 young people from Goderich took part in a Music Concepts
workshop spanning three days. The workshop was operated by six young people from
Toronto and financed through an Opportunities for Youth grant from the Federal Govern-
ment. There were two such workshops touring Ontario making stops In many communities
during the summer months. Arrangements for the workshop were made by the Goderich
Recreation Department and local O.F.Y. program known as Recre/Action (staff photo)

The Pendulum Players, a
young people's theatrical group
of Goderich have been denied
use of the Huron County Jail
this year due to the propose_
construction at. the Assessment
'building. The group, which con-
tsist�-1 sehool-and=-univf.r-
sity students used the jail last
year for practices and _perfor-
mances but County Council
feels that they will interfere
with the building being done.

by retaining all, or most, of the

Goderich and to . boost . the
economy of the . Town of
Goderich by inducing neigh-
bouring communities to shop in

announced the roster of players
and plays for this summers
productions. Some of the plays
include, "Under the Yum -Yum
Tree", "The Reluctant
Debutante", and "The Fan-
tasticks."

The downtown merchants
have agreed to close off the
square to traffic during Sum-
mer Fest '73. A letter from the
Downtown Businessmen's
Association to Mike Dymond
stated that they agreed to the
idea because, "This idea will
enable both the public and
anyone involved in the ac-
tivities to have more area and
safer walking room. We believe
that this will help avoid traffic
confusion, accidents and the
worry of the children running
in front of the traffic."

Last week, Goderich Town
Council approved the construc-
tion of a, temporary weather
station to •be built at Sky Har-'
bor Airport. Councillor Bill
Clifford said plans are to incor-
porate the weather station at a
later date into the municipal
airport complex, but he added
that some temporary accom-
modation was- necessary im-
mediately. , It was noted the
-weather station could no longer_
be maintained in a trailer -like
unit as in the past.
The annual - Legion Picnic
was held Sunday. The oldest
veteran in attendance was
William Westlake who is over
80 and the oldest veteran's wife
was - Mrs. K.A. Hirst, Dun -
caster, Yorkshire, England,
aged , 74. Youngest in atten-
dance was Adrian Davies,
seven and a. half months.
-The Signal -Star ran -a series
of pictures throughout the
paper illustrating some of the
more unsightly spots around
Goderich including pictures of
buckled safety cables and_weed
covered mailboxes.

Ceramic mugs went on sale
at the local tourist information
booth last Friday bearing the
official crest of the Port of
Goderich. More important the
cups, tankards, mugs -and
ashtrays are produced locally
at the ceramics shop at
Goderich Psychiatric Hospital.
A seminar was held last
Friday and, Saturday by
Recre/Action for cycling.
Heading up the workshop were
three members of the Canadian
Cycling Association and the -
Hamilton Cycling Club. John
Pamminger of Recre/Action felt
that there , was a ,good
possibility that a Goderich
Cycling Club could be in the
making.
An inspector from the On-
tario Provincial Police will be
%sent to Vanastra, formerly the
Canadian Armed Forces Base,
Clinton to see if there is enough
policing done in the area. Jack
Riddell, MPP requested the in-
vestigation after receiving
several calls from Vanastra
residents asking for more police
protection. The area is under
the jurisdiction of the Goderich
detachment of the OPP.
The Signal -Star showed a lit-
tle bit of bare flesh with a
report on, the Miss. Nude On-
tario contest where our repor-
ter found nothing too thrilling
about the pageant.
Huron County Council an-
nual picnic was held Wed-
nesday, July 18 at Seaforth.

of Goderich town council the
_ jail committee was authorized
. to "co-ordinate public input" in
formulating plans for the use of
the former Huron County Jail.

The Goderich Police and Fire
Departments have received an
18 foot fiberglas boat equipped
with a 50 horsepower motor as
a gift from Mr. and Mrs. C.
Earl Empey of Goderich. In a
previous statement which Ap-
peared in the—Signal-Star,
Police Chief Pat King had men-
tioned that; the deprartment
should have a boat since the
municipality" was so closely
related to the water. Mr. Em-
pey then called the Police
department and sifter
discovering their needs offered
to buy them a boat to use for
saving lives.
Last 'Thursday -evening laun-
ched the beginning .of an of-
ficial Goderich Pro Life Group
in the area. Chairman of the
group is Mrs. Pat Osborn. The
Pro Life Group will be non sec-
tarian - basically an
educational body and will
promote respect for life at any
age, esPecially respect for life of.
the unborn.

Monday after a courtinjunc•
tion stopped picketing of the
plant by striking employees of
DOMTAR's Sifto' Salt Mine.
Monday morning a family of

R.G. Shrier, president of the
Signal -Star Publishing announ-
ced this week that the company
will be relocating their offices
and plant from West St. where
they have been operating for
about 35 years, to the In-
dustrial
ndustrial Park on Highway 21
just outside Goderich. The
move is being made to accom-
modate the phenomenal growth
of the company in the last
'seven y'ear's. Mr. Shrier com-
mented that the majority of
customers arrive at the Signal
in automobiles and the new
building will Allow them to'
park easier and will remove
one more bottleneck downtown.
It will be the first time the
paper has had all its facilities
under one roof. Up till now the
press has been„ housed in a
separate building in the rear of
thaskffi4 on Mmt St.
Among the many unusual
arrivais in town during the
tourist season were a belch of
bogus $50 bills. Two bills were
passed to...local merchants and
discovered by the banks. Police
Chief P. King warned mer -
•chants not to accept any of the
denomination' until the coun-
terfeiter had moved on.
Summerrest '73 wound pp

participation of the people: of
Goderich compared to last
year's festival. The Goderich
police were also pleased to
report that they had encou n-..
tered very few problems during
the week and that the beer tent
operated by the 'Kinsmen was
no difficulty.

and the Planning Board met to

The world economic
situation has a
dark cloud of
gloom over it but their is a ray
of sunlight shining on the
Sheaffer Pen" Co.. Louis (Ned)
Bishop president of the com-
pel)); says:that the future of the
firm is bright. Mr. Bishop was
in town touring the plant on
Huron Rd. and conferring with
manager Bill Gardner. Sheaffer
Pen distributes in 154 countries
of the world and are happy to
announce that their sales arid
acceptability are better than
ever.
The community is beginning
to feel the effect of the now 10
week old strike of the workers
at Sifto. The loss in wages has
meant a decline of commerce in
the town .and a settlement is
hoped forin the near future.
Earl Rawson, spokesman for
Rawson and Swartman,
clothiers in Goderich was
proud to announce the expan-
sion of their concern to Exeter.
The new store ,was formerly
owned by George Vriese and
will employ three people.
Despite the efforts of the
local businessmen the A & P
store will remain open on Sun-
day until the fall. The Head of-
fice of the company reported to
Jack Hinton area manager that
they could not go back on their
policy pledged at the outset of
the summer.
Rusty Ormandy of Goderich
and Shirley McFadden of
Bayfield placed second in the
intermediate section of the
Stamford International Dance
Competition held in Niagara
Falls. The couple had only been
skating together for seven, mon-
ths but ,had practiced a •great.
deal at the Ilderton Ska,ting
School near London during the
summer months.
Art -Trek, a group of
travelling artists that are en-
,
couraging people to discover a
hidden potential they may very
well possess in themselves are
scheduled' to arrive in Goderich
soon. -The show will be on for
four days during which time
the public can view art and see
how it is evident in their every
day life. •

year's winner of the DRMCO
Champion University Scholar-
ship. Doug will ' be attending
the University of Waterloo

opinion of his clients, the plan
to build a shopping mall in
•Goderich was "economically
feasible." He added,., that it
would not hurt local merchants
but instead l elp„keep business
in Goderich.

proved the preparation of a
bylaw to facilitate the construc-
tion of a $2,000,000 shopping
mall as proposed by. Suncoast
Estates for a 16 acre site on the
easterly side of Highway 21
south.
At least one Opportunities
for Youth Grant was termed a
success in this area. Dwayne
- Linner and eight other young •
musicians formed "The Band"
to entertain at hospitals and
nursing homes all across Huron
County and other places like
the Midwestern Children's .
Centre at, Palmerston.
The Kinette Girls' Softball
League finished its regular
sciile August 5. The Belies
ended up on top with 10 points
while the Swingers and the
Wreckers were tied for second
spot with 6 points each. The
Zoomers finished in the
basement with two points.
Police this week investigated
a ,major shoplifting incidentin
which two girls, estimated to be
about 13 years of age, stole
rings valued at about $100
from Bricker- Jewellry Store on
the Square. The rings, were
stolen when they had been left
on top of a counter and the
lone clerk was occupied with a
customer in another part of the
store. Two rings are missing,
one valued a $6Q and the other
at $40. _

Although the weather was
good this summer in Goderich,
Snug Harbour's business fell:
down this ...year. Manager J.
Alex Wilkins blamed the slack
season on the high water levels
on Lake Huron and gas
rationing that is talking place in
the United States. Mr. Wilkins
noted that most of the visiting
boats have been sailboats.

pollution and the cost of
5: operating cars by building an ,
electric car, Mr. Morley, a
technician at Dominion Roads
.and. Machinery Company
Limited has converted a four
cylinder 1966 Vauxhall Viva
auto into an electrically
powered vehicle by installing
an electric motor, a controller
which acts like a rheostat that
regulates direction and speed
and six 12 voltbatteries which
provides the power. He intends
to use -the car for : in -town
driving only.
A ratification vote will be
held Sung by the . Inter-
national Chemical Workers
Union. Local - 682 president,
Harold Leddy refused to reveal
Negotiations between the
Sifto Salt Mine here and 180
striking underground workers,
members of Local 682 of the In-
ternational Chemcial Workers
Union resumed last Monday in
London., The meetings were
convened by, the Ontario
Ministry of Labor • after no
progresswasmade on the local
level - to end the 10 week old
strike. Talks were broken off
Tuesday on the advice of the
government mediators but, will
resume August 21 in Toronto.

D,A. (Dan) Campbell of
Goderich has proved himself a
moat unusual patient' at
Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital. Recently a new type
of physiotherapy equipment
- was made a',iilable to treat
Mr. Campbell although the
hospital did not own the unit.
When he learned that the
hospital did not have equip-
ment available at all times he
purchased the unit and
donated it to he physiotherapy
departmen ven though he
cannot go to the lounges, Mr.
Campbell heard that new
television sets would make the
stay in hospital for his fellow
patients a little more pleasant
so he also purchased two new
sets. -
The"Signal-Star vias honored
at the awards presentation din-
ner held by the Canadian Com-
munity Newspapers Association
at the group's annual conven-
tion held last week in Calgary,
Alberta. Mrs, R.G: Shrier ac-
. cepted a plaque on behalf of the
Signal Star, presented for the
third place editorial page in the
C.C.N.A.'s "Better Newspapers
Competition" for paPers with a
circulation of 2,500 - 3,9.99.

N.J. (Sam) • MacGregor of
Huron Ridge Ltd. has announ-
ced plans for a shopping plaza
in Kincardine to be located just
west of the new Canadian Tire
Store. - Major food and depart-
ment store chains have commit-
ted' themselves to the new plaza
that will have a minimum of
•80,000 square feet of selling
space. Mr. SVlacGregor stated
that it "will be the shopping
_centre of. Bruce County. It will
be big enough to offset
Goderich and it will stop Port
Elgin". ---
The weather station .slated
for Sky Harbor Airport will be
constructed byiFisher Custom
Builders for a total price of
$14,777.98. The Fisher bid was
the lowest of three and was ap-
proved °by the Airport Commit-
tee at a special meeting August
10. Other tenders were submit
ted by Allister Green and Ken
Hutchins Construction 'Ltd.
As of August 1, the former
practice of Dr. M.W. Raithby
was transfered to the hands of
27 -year-old Dr. Bill Schilthuis.

Striking members' of Local
6$2 of the Chemical -Workers
Union ratified an agreement on
Sunday afternoon that will give
them a wage increase of $1.45
over the term of the three year
contract and additional fringe
benefits.
