casions since 1932, when the
presentation was initiated, has
the shipping season commen-
ced earlier.
The Goderich Town Council
ioted to have all their future
meetings open to the public and
the press, following a motion by
Councillor Elsa Haydon. The
otion drew a response of sur-
prise from Reeve Deb Shewfelt
as he was under the impression
hat the -meetings had never
been closed to the public. Mrs.
Haydon, however, claimed that
the press had been invited to be
present for background infor-
mation but that nothing be
published before recommen-
dations from committee
meetings come before open
council sessions.

The March session of Huron
ounty - Council was a
�mewhat low-key Meeting

Although the 1973 budget has
not yet been fin•liaed, there
was good news for county
ratepayers in the Executive
Committee report. It was stated
there is every indication there
will be no increase in county
rates this year.

Beginning Monday, home

The 1973 season of marine
•activit',' from Goderich 'Harbor
got off to an early start due to a
mild winter and an earlier then
usual spring. Salt freighters
began plying the waters of the
local harbor and Lake Huron
nearly three weeks ahead of
schedule and now the Goderich
Sailing Club are beginning to
make their plans for a summer
on the water.

has been flooded recently with
various applications for the
establishment of, tourist camps
and trailer parks.
To date Huron County
Health officials have placed
notices on about a dozen cot-
tages along the shore of Lake
Huron setting the premises
aside as • being "Unfit for
Human Habitation". MOH Dr.
Frank Mills estimates that in
all 4,000 to 5,000 cottages
along the lake bank are affec-
ted in varying degrees because
—of- the—high- water- levels- on

are the Novice Grand Cham-
pions of the Western Ontario
Athletic Association. Last
weekend the Legion team went
undefeated in three games in
the W.O.A.A.'s Novice Grand
Championship Tournament in
Walkerton to win the title.
Friday evening Goderich
Kinettes celebrated 25 years of
service to Goderich at the
White Carnation in
Holmesville. All the past
GodArich' - Kinettes and
° husbands were invited to the
celebrations.
If numbers mean anything,
the current fund-raising for the
Canadian Cancer Society in
Huron County { is going to go
over the top. The kick-off of the
campaign held in Holmesville
was attended by an estimated
700 people.

Huron County Playhouse,
located on a farm just east of
Grand., Bend, Bend, will open its
second season July 11 in vastly`
improved facilities thanks to a
LIP grant of $2700 to make an
even , $30,000. Last ymear the
theatre troupe staged their •
production in a circus- tent ad-

largest number of nominations
for the "At Home Dance"
queen at G.D.C.I. The girls
nominated were Barb Blake,

Mary. Van Rooy and Diane
Crawford.
During last week's council -
meeting, Goderich Town Coun-
cil quickly and decisively
.:.r_escinded_ . a previous motion
with regard to the South Storm
Sewer. On the advice of B.M.
Ross and Associate Limited,
council unanimously agreed
that a motion requesting a
redistribution of assessment for
the cost of the drain so that no
one -home one -lot homeowner
would pay more than $25
should be stricken from the
records.
The pupils in the 19 elemen-
tary separate schools in Huron
and Perth Counties will start
their summer vacation a • week
earlier than their teachers this
year. While the pupils close the
doors behind them for the
1972-73 term on June 22 the
principals and teachers will use
the last week - June 25-29 • as
"professional activities days'
whe i they will evaluate their
curriculum, objectives, school
policies and program planting.
Police Chief Pat King an-

Hills, formerly of the London,
England police and the Lon-
don, Ont. force, and Larry

the Metro Toronto Police

The headaches Huron
County Health Officials have
been experiencing• (with -
sewage) took a turn inland
recently when itcameto light
that Benmiller Estates at Ben -
miller had installed a sewage
treatment unit. Officials from
the Ontario Ministry of -the En-
vironment and the Huron
County Health Unit inspected
the treatment set up and infor-
med the owners that a public
hearing would be called into
• the matter before approval was
given.
The Ontario Ministry of the
Environment, assisted by local
Health Units, has inspected all
shoreline; aireas-� ` �`frorii"
Burlington on Lake Orttario, to
Amberley at the north end of
Huron County, to ascertain the
extent of the damage to private
sewage disposal sjrst'ems caused
by the existing high lake levels.
R.E. McKinley, M.P. for
Huron, was; at Huron County
Council's April session last
Thursday dnd held out strong
hopes for restoration of
passenger train service in the
area. McKinley heartily endor-
sed council's action in con-
curring with a resolution from
Robert S. Cherry, Palmerston,
who is petitioning the Hon.
Jean Marchand, Minister of
Transport, to act decisively and
immediately lin this regard

General Hospital can now treat
all cardiac axrhythmias (heart•
beat irregularity) because of an
ingenius piece . of equipment
called a pacemaker donated by
the Maple Leaf Chapter of the
I.O.D.E. Dr. R.W. Flowers who
had picked out the pacemaker
said,
"It is an important ad-
dition to the hospital egiip-
ment."

April 12 .. Chief Public Health Inspector with the Huron County Health Unit, Jim McCaul,
posts a notice closing this cottage near Kintall because of dangerously eroded sewage
systems. The building itself has also suffered considerable damage from the high water and
erosion. To date about a dozen such notices have been posted by Health Unit officials as
they begin the huge task of inspecting sewage systems damaged by the lake conditions
along Huron's 45 miles of lake shore. In all there are between 4,000 and 5,000 cottages.
