An aura of controversy and
change seemed to be enveloping
the community throughout the
year as issue upon issue came
into public view And ensured
that the citizens of Goderich
would not have a dull moment
in 1973.
Signal -Star is pleased to take
you, our reader, back into the
year for a second look at the
serious as well as the light side
of the news which is now
merely a file in the long history
of our town.
1973 began in a political way
as the inauguration of Goderich
Town • Council took place
Tuesday eitening _ January 2.
For the first time in many
years, the oath of office was not
administered by Judge H.
Glenn Hayes.
Town administrator Harold
Walls administered the oath to
Mayor Harry Worsell, Reeve.
Deb Shewfelt, Deputy -reeve
Stan Profit and Councillors
Elsa; Haydon, Eileen Palmer,
Bill Clifford, Frank Walkom
and Dave Gower. Councillor
Leroy Harrison was absent for
the ceremony. -
Some good news for the
recreation committee came at.
their last meeting. The allotted
budget for 1972 left them with
a surplus of $6,000` which was
placed in a reserve fund as a
cushion against capital costs of
future recreation programs.
The 1973 New Year's Baby
made her appearance at 10:55
a.m. January 1, 'in Alexandra
Marine and General Hospital,
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
J.A. (Andy) Plunkett of
Auburn. Karen Elizabeth, the
seven pound .seven and one half
..ounce.,- belly, girl has .. three,
brothers and one sister.
The grocery shopper had the
pleasure of buying sliced side
bacon . for 89 cents a pound.
Presently at time of writing, the
cost of the same bacon is $1.25.
Checking back through the
year, from beginning to end the
average increase in meat prices
has been 30 cents.
JANUARY 11, 1973
Cayley E. Hill of Goderich
was elected chairman of the
Huron County Board of
Education at theinaugural
meeting last Monday. He suc
ceeds Robert Elliott of Clinton
Mr. Hill running against Johil
Broadfoot of RR 1 Brucefield
needed two votes to win the
chairmanship.
Reeve Roy Pattison of East
Wawanosh was elected Warden
of Huron County on the fourth
ballot Tuesday in county
cou ncil's chambers in
the Court House, Goderich.
Although five men were com-
peting for the honor, the real
race was between Reeve Pat-
tison and Reeve Hugh Flynn of
Hullett. The tally after the

Two Goderich artists and
two eager assistants were awar-
ded an L.I.P. grant of $8,200 to
produce between 150 and 200
paintings during the 21 week.

prints and frames. The pain-
tings which depicted various
scenes around Huron County
were hung in several public
buildings throughout the
county free of charge.
On Tuesday afternoon,
CKCO TV personality and host
of the children's program "Tree
House", Danny Coughlan,
visited the students at Victoria
School. While at Victoria,
Danny (ed the students in a
sing -along.
James McCaul of Stratford
was officially appointed Chief
Public Health Inspector of
Huron County. His appoint-
ment follows the resignation of
former Chief Inspector William
Empey.
On Monday, a Guenther
Tuckey tractor tanker driven by
George De Jong went out of
control. on Highway 8 near the
Sheaffer Pen Co. The truck
skidded' across the road
knocking out a hydro pole and
came to rest between two trees.
There were no injuries repor=
ted.
JANUARY 18, 1973
• After serving Huron County
and the people of Ontario for
more than 14 years, Charles
MacNaughton resigned from
the Ontario Cabinet and his,
'Seat in the Ontario Legislature.
Premier William Davis said
that a by-election would likely
be called shortly.
In` his last statement" before
relinquishing his duties as
Treasurer of Ontario and MPP
for Huron, the Honorable
Charles MacNaughton announ-
ced that 'two more °Huron
County firms would receive On-
tario Development Corporation
loans totalling $715,000 to ex -
and . their operations.
«ominion Roads and
Machinery Company Ltd. were
to receive a total of $625,000
towards the cost of a new plant
in Goderich Industrial Park
and improved facilities at their
present plant. The projects are
estimated to cost as much as
$1.6 million.
J.F. Farm Machinery in
Exeter was to receive a loan of
$90,000 toward the cost of a
20,000 square foot addition.
The Goderich Sailors won
two of , three games they played
last week. In the three games
the Sailors hit the mesh behind.

The Goderich Lions Club met
last Thursday at the Bedford
Hotel to inaugurate five new
members. The Lions District
Governor Ellwood Tucker was
on hand for the proceedings.
The Goderich Police in this
paper warned children about
the dangers of bumper hitching.
A number of complaints had
been registered with them
about children grabbing car
and truck bumpers and sliding
along behind them. One child
was injured this week doing
this very thing.

The Goderich Signal -Star
has had a steady flow o,calls,
letters and comments this week
about a recent report that
Huron County Council has
voted to tear down the walls 'of
the largest exercise yard at the
former Huron County Jail. The
wall would be taken down in
order to accommodate a
proposed addition to the ad-
joining assessment office.
Bruce Sully announced last
week that the Sully foundation
has agreed to sponsor the thiri'
annual symphony concert
which will take place, in the
G.D.C.I. auditorium in March.
The Kinsmen Club of
Goderich recently presented a
cheque to Arena Manager Bill
Lumby for the sum of . $2,000.
The money represents another
installment in the Kinsmen's
$8,000 pledge to the arena.
There is to be no smoking in
the Goderich Town Council
Chambers. That rule was
established last , week during
the regular council meeting
when not one cigarette, pipe or
cigar except those of spectators
who ; were `unaware of the
regulation, was in evidence.
The new Goderich Town
Council voted itself a raise in
pay as one of the first official
duties of 1973. Members gave
Mayor Harry Worsell a healthy
$900 _ per annum raise, from
$2,100 to $3,000 and the
remainder of the members a
$300 hike from $1,200 to $1,500
per annum.

A well known Wirigham en-
tertainer and Huron County
resident Earl Heywood has ex-
pressed interest- in the prefer-
vation of the Huron County
Jail located in Goderich. In a
telephone interview Tuesday
evening, Heywood said he is
'`deeply concerned about the
possible demolition of part of
the jail wall
The long- wait is over. The
by-election for. Huron County
has been called for March 15
and a successor will be named
for C.S. MacNaughton who
retired from politics to spend
more time .with his family,
Goderich will field three can-
didates for the nomination
meetings. They are: Bert Such,
Progressive Conservative, John
Lyndon, Liberal and Paul
Carroll, New Democratic Party.
At press time, Ed Bain, In-
dependent Socialist said he was
interested but was not sure if
he would run.
Huron County Council will
not support Midwestern
Development Council in 1973.
That decision was reached on a
recorded vote which was 28-21
in favour of a recommendation
by the development committee
not to renew membership in
M.D.C.

Plans are nearing completion
for a seminar on drug abuse
which is to be held Saturday
February 17 at the Goderich
Psychiatric Hospital. The day
long seminar, aimed at probing
deeper into the problems of
drug abuse and possible
solutions has ,been organized by
the Goderich Labor Council.
A stray spark started a fire in
a 45 gallon drum of glue which
• set fire to an aluminum storage
building owned by Art's Land-
scaping and Nursery. The
building was rented by
Dominion Road Machinery Co.
who had a grader severely
damaged in the blame.
The "Save The Jail Society"
has contacted Pierre Barton for
- support in their effort to keep
the old building intact, Mr.
Berton who is familiar with the,
jail, wrote a poen abort it
during the trial of Stephen
