Father Time speaks out
(by Father Time)
Well, this year has about had it and I •
guess it hasn't been much different than
• any other in. history.
There was the usual fighting and
killing with a few pleasant moments in-'
terspersed. It seems this time of year,
people like to join me as I review the
events: The Signal -Star even decided to
publish a special edition of news from
their own little history book.
kept such a close watch over the couple
before the marriage. I was a little con-
cerned that it would have to be post-
poned because the groom -to -be had an
upset stomach a couple of days before
the_ ceremony, but AP reassured
everyone the next, day by reporting that
he was feeling much better.
Well, perhaps the new year will bring
new something different to light. We
haven't had a miracle in quite a while,
let's try for that.

I was reading the articles and saw that
the Town Councilsure got themselves in
quite a few difficult situations this year,
what with storm sewers and shopping
plazas.
I'm' not one to stand in the way of
progress. While I've seen it do a lot of
damage, things always seem to work
out. I certainly hope the people of
Goderich don't try and stand in its way
because I'm afraid they might get run
over.
Speaking of changes, I also noticed
that the Liberals finally got a man from
that area to the Legislature. Well, I
always say, it doesn't _hurt to give
everybody a chance to try their hand at
something. Too much of one thing isn't
always good.
I was real sorry to, hear about the
Lakeshore erosion and all that damage
it's causing. Storms, like the one they
had in March and other natural distur-
bances; well you just can't avoid them.
Oh well, knowing the competent govern-
ment will fix everything up for the town
must- be a reassuring thought to
everybody.
I. may seem like an old man hoping for
better things in the future, but I was sure
pleased to see that the people of
Goderich were able to save the Huron
County Jail. Marvelous building, now I
suppose all they have to do is find some
use for it. It would probably make a
great hotel as long as the atmosphere
didn't get on some guests' nerves or
maybebring back old memories.
The downtown renewal scheme is
probably the brightest idea the town had
all year. You know, it's kind of nice to
keep some things the inlay they should
be and since Goderich is "The Prettiest
Little Town", people should keep
working 'to'keep it that way. It would be
nice if the citizens would extend that
program all across town while they're at
it. Not much sense in having a nice
downtown if other areas are . going
downhill.
Goderich has had its ups and downs
this year but so has the rest of the world
The Americans have had such a rough,
time with their government that
Canadians haven't had time to worry
about their own problems.
That ,Watergate thing, well scanda*
are nothing new to me. Between Spiro
Agnew resigning and just about
everyone else getting fired it's a miracle
that the country is still standing. But I
guess only a man of President Nixon's
c4libre could get them .where they are
today. - -
Wars have been. around for so long,
that I hardly take notice of them'
anymore. The Arabs and Israelis are
having a go again, and while I believe in,
letting people work out their own
problems I think it's .a real shame that
the Arabs had to embargo all that oil:
Canada isn't that badly off once Alberta
signs their pledge of allegiance. •
I feel real sorry for the Americans
though, President 'Nixon just doesn't
have time to worry about energy and
things like that. He has a country to run
you know.
The highlight of the' year for 'me was
the royal wedding. I just love weddings
and Princess Anne and what's his name
didn't let me down.
I was especially pleaded that the press

Dead for New Year?
Funny how people like to die. To
celebrate, they sit down with a group of
friends, exchange some light conver-
sation and put away as rrfuch alcohol as

Funny how some people have no in-
tention of dying...but they do. They too,
go to a party, see all their friends, . but
they use `their heads, watch how much
they drink, and head forhome, sober,
alert. Then some drunk smashes head
on into him and kills him. It's a crime.

number one, had a picture and
caption of Mormon Elders
Bonner and Holmes in-
troducing to Mayor
Worsell and the
Goderich community their
new family program
called "Family Home
Evening". The brief article
went on to say that , this
program is non -denominational
and that the Mormon
missionaries are simply aiming
this program to our citizens for
the purpose of constructing
stronger family units in our
community: This raises at least
two questions in my mind:
(1) Aside frnm the King
James Version ,of the Bible
which the Mormons accept as
part of the Word of God, "in-
sofar as it is correctly tran-
slated", they have added Doc-
trine and Covenants such as
the book titled "The Pearl of
Great Price," and the Primary
volume the "Book of Mor-
mon," to the canon of what
they wcluld call Authorized
Scripture. If then, this new
program places any emphasis
on Mormon Canon which no
other denomination in our com-
munity accepts as Authorized

in most cases, they are professional
drivers and are prepared and alert to the
dangers of the holiday highways.
If you must drive, be prepared. Look
ahead for possible trouble. You're sober,
but what about that car coming towards
you? In addition to just watching the
road, look for possible escape routes. If
the approaching car starts to drift into
your lane, keep your eye on the shoulder
of the road, looking for ways to get out
of the way. When approaching an inter-
section, take your foot off the gas, look
ahead, and keep your foot ready for the
brakes.
Be patient. When you are surrounded
on all ,sides by poor drivers, keep your
cool. Accept the fact that not everyone
is as good a driver as you, just take your
time, relax, and watch the speed
lim,it...an extra ten miles an hour doesn't
mean much time wise, but it will throw
you about thirty feet further through the
front windshield when you hit that tree.
Dominion Autombile Association's
Safety Department reminds all motorists
at this time 'of the year, that "Safe
Driving is a Family Affair". With the kids
home in bed, it's up to you to make sure
that you and the other guy gets home to
see them.
