Children take a special delight in making their own Yuletide adornments to brighten the home. For instance, green ,,plastic garbage bags can be used to make an attractive miniature Christmas tree. The only other - materials needed are a styrofoam cone, straight pins, celluloid tape, 'pinking shears and some small balls or bells. 'Since the completed tree stands only about .14 inches high, it can be used in a num- ber of colourful settings. It is small enough to place on a mantel, book case, coffee table or to serve as a dining room table centrepiece. The idea comes from the "GLAD" people at Union Carbide and the 'how-to' part is easy enough for children to follow. First step is to get a styrofoam cone. Second step is to take two large "Glad" gar- bage bags and cut them' into squares of about 4111,' witfry pinking shears. This job van be speeded by first folding the bags. Next step is: to make the fUowerets which form the tree's 'branches'. This is done by placing three or four squares of plastic on top of each other. Then push a finger into the centre of the squares so that the part jutting out forms a 'stem' when twisted. Make enough flowerets to cover the styrofoam cone and starting at the top, attach them to the form, with straight pins (and toothpicks also help). Lie the stems flat against the form as you are placing them and hide the pins under the upper layers of plastic. Add small' silver or golden balls by pinning them in the cenire of a number of the flowerets and arranging the plastic around them: A small star for the top and some artificial snow completes the decorations. This same method can be used with a styrofoam circle to make a Yuletide wreath decorated with holly buds. As a precaution, do not trim the tree or wreath with elec- trical ornaments. . Another practical use for the versatile garbage bags is to place therm under your Christ, mas tree to protect floors, rugs and carpeting. Arrange a few more bags 7around the tree stand and spray with artificial snow. When the holiday season is over, use the bags to store decorations and to dispose of debris. In a keynote speech to the meeting Elbert van Donker- sgoed, Secretary -Manager of the Drayton -based Federation said, "Canada is second only to the U.S. in making con- tributions, to WFP and on a per capita basis we are number one. But these are not valid criteria for determining our Canadian responsibility to the food needs of the world. Our criteria' trust be .the resources fur production' that our God has given us. In, view of the huge production potential with which God has W blessed this country, :1.50 to $2.00 per capita in food aid is peanuts! cunrrot appease our con- sciences `with figures in the millions and talk about being number one. Resolutions were adopted by the meeting which call for fur- ther examination' by the C.F.F. of Canada's participation, of provincial participations, and - of direct participation by far- mers organizations in food -aid programs. Re -,elected for a fourth term as President of the Ontario - wide Federation was Martin Verkuyl, a Hickson area corn grower and pork producer. John Jannsens, an .egg producer from Watford was re- elected as Vice -President for a second term. Federation reports showed an increase in financial support of 70% over 1272. Plans were made for a special celebration in March of 1974 at the occasion of the Federation's 20th anniversary. Safety Tips There's no place like home for the Holidays... And there's • vno place like home for Christ- mas -fire hazards. Keep that tree butt immersed in water... Check those strings of lights for frayed insulation and possible short circuits... ' Clear away discarded gift wrappings prom- ptly... And don't smoke near the tree. 1 1 Farmers Are you thinking abluf building?
