Elvll3Elt 20, 1913 Goderich Town Council Briefs At the --Administrative Com- mittee meeting held last Thur- sday the Committee recommen- ded that Council deduct the business taxes for 1973 from the Transient Trader's Deposits.,, That recommen- dation will- be handled at this week's regular council session. A report from the Building Inspector was recommended af- ter a point Councillor Elsa Haydon raised concerning the wording used by Roy Breck ridge. He ad suggested concerning Ted Bisset says .Christmas must be safe A Happy Christmas can change in a few moments into a family tragedy, warns Fire Chief Ted Bissett, in homes where fire safety precautions are neglected. Such prf cal tions should head the list of every 'sensible family's preparations for Christmas, he says. The Fire Chief urges the public to exercise special care in the getting up and decoration of Christmas trees, and draws attention to the following important points:' If plans call for a natural tree it should be bought fresh and green, and kept outdoors the demolition of buildings, that was likely the reason why- that hy-that the land should -be cleared Eastbank decided they wanted within six rnonths of the , it now. It is not earning anyone demolition or some other . anY money while in the hands suitable length of time as he of Mrs Murphy, it was felt. deems it necessary. Councillor The Committee decided to Haydon pointed out that the release the funds to Eastbank Council had passed Bylaw 20 and that the company would be in April that stated that it had advised of the decision.; to be a period of six months and that it should not -be -left to the discretion of one man. Town Administrator Harold Walls pointed Out that there would be times when a six months period would be out of the question and that Mr. Breckenridge inserted that con- dition only for that purpose. Councillor Haydon agreed that there would be exceptions but- the clause should only per- tain to extreme situations. The report was approved * * Courrc-il had received a request - from Eastbank Buildings Limited for their $1,200 that is held in trust by Town Solicitor Dan Murphy. Councillor Frank Walkom noted that although Che previous agreement with East - bank stated that they would be responsible for certain services in the subdivision, the Town had installed a light standard on request from the residents, at the Town's expense, when Eastbank had refused to install one themselves. or in an unheated garage before Some discussion ,was made being brought into the home for.• concerning the possibility of decorating. Coun- cillor Dave Gower read the agreement with Don McIntosh, which originally stated that the cables would be installed un- derground, not w only for ap- pearance sake but also for bet- ter reception during inclement weather. uu n suggested that perhaps, these additions were done to improve their facilities in hopes of drawing more members, thus remedying their`" financial problems. "Obviously they are not working," replied Councillor • Haydon.Councillor tower then poin- ted out that while they should not be relieved 'of past taxes, future business tax should be reviewed as in his opinion, "business tax assessed in that spot is over assessed". They pointed out that may be ,true and that perhaps the other clubs in the area . should be looked at. Mrs. Haydon pointed out that, it was cheaper to install the cables by attaching them to P.U.C. and Bell poles and while he may be getting the -job done the above ground cables "look very obvious and not vary good at all. Mayor Worsen agreed that perhaps the issue should be looked into•rther and that Mr. Mclntch should be invited to Council the beginning of next year * * * - The Maitland CountryClub Limited has requested that council allow them to write-off past arrears including $1400 in business tax from - 1971 , and , 1972. Declare the tree a non-smoking area and .. keep matches out of the hands of children. Do not allow discarded gift wrappings to accumulate under the tree. Dispose of them as soon as the gifts are • opened. Even a green tree will. burn if ignited by burning pap around , the base. Set up .the tree away from heat sources such as fireplaces, TV sets or radiators. Do not allow it to block access to doors or,windows'in the event of,fire. Switch. off tree lights at bed- time or when leaving the house, Fire Chief Bissett points out that tests have proved that the safest tree is a tree with its butt set in water. However, if a tree has dried out before it is set up, it cannot regain its safe moisture level. A dry tree can be ignited by a single match, to burn violently to a charred state in a few seconds. s, Even artificial trees can be serious, fire hazards. Metallic trees are conductors of elec' tricity, and should not be decorated with strings.of lights, but illuminated with floodlights. Some plastic trees, made from styrene materials,• are flammable, unlike . those made from polyvinylchloride. All trees should be removed, from the home as soon as possible after the Christmas celebrations. Chief Bissett also noted that he would like to express a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the residents of Goderich on behalf of himself and the local volunteer fire department and their families? Losing weight is often a mat- ter of simple arithmetic, suggest food specialists at the Ontario Food Council, Ministry of Agriculture and Food. A well-balanced diet with fewer calories than you expend will cause you to lose weight. Five - hundred fewer calories per day should reduce your weight by one pound a week. Your daily diet should always include food from all the basic food groups: milk and milk pooducta; fruits and vegetables; meat and alter- nates; cereals, bread; and pastas. Portion size is impor- tant. It is --also wise to avoid empty calorie foods such as jam syrup, jelly, soft drinks; alcoholic beverages, candy, and rich deserts such as cake, as they contribute nothing or a lmost nothing to nutrition, ex- cept calories.
