Snowmobile Safety Week in
Ontario starts on Monday,
December 10th and continues
over the following weekend to
include December 16th.
Safety Week is a reminder to
everyone (the snowmobilers
themselves, industry and public
information media) that there
is a great need for province -
wide safety promotions in this
sport. Ontario Safety League
research shows an all-time high
record 'of 52 fatal snowmobile
accidents set during the 1972-
73 season in Ontario. Collisions
with motor vehicles on public
thoroughfares and drownings
accounted for over three-
yuaTt rs f.:_these -deaths and
tied ability was a con-
tributing factor 'in many of
them.
The snowmobile industry is
aware of the need for an
educational program to
promote the -safe use of these
rrtotd1'ii -snow vehicles. The
Ontario Snowmobile
Distributors Association in
cooperation with safety -minded
organizations is presenting Pro
Driver Snowmobile Safety
Clinics in towns and cities all
across Ontario. Don't miss this
interesting show when it comes
to your community. Learn how
to operate a snowmobile safely
and avoid accidents.

CHATHAM -The Ontario
Energy Board last week
authorized Union Gas Limited
to charge an additional seven
:cents per 1,000 cubic feet for
natural gas service. The in-
crease becomes effective with
January billings for gas used in
December.
The higher rates will apply to
all of Union's more than
360,000 customers throughout
southwestern Ontario. A
typical residential customer
will pay, on average, an extra
80 cents per month or about
$10 per year.
The increased rates were ap-
proved by the Energy Board,
pn an interim basis, following a
hearing held during October.
They are subject to confir-
mation at a full review of
- Union's rates to be conducted
starting in mid-January.
"In announcing the interim in-
crease Union Gas explained
that .wholesale prices charged
by its principal supplier,
TransCanada . PipeLines.
Limited, have increased twice
since September 1, by a total of
about 7 cents per 1,000 cubic
feet. Union's other major sup-,
plier, Panhandle Eastern Pipe
Lihe Company, will raise its
prices by a similar amount on
December 1.
The total impact of these
three increases will be to raise
Union's gas costs by an ad-
ditional $17 million per year.
Union did not ask for the in-
terim increase to apply to
January billings, even though
the Company has been paying
higher wholesaler prices since"
September..w.1: The reason is the
Citnpany decided to pass on to
its customers the savings
resulting from the fact that it
*had in storage largevolumes of
gas purchased since last April
at an average, price lower than
the new pricer} prevailing this
fall.
By thus delaying the flow-
through of higher costs to its
customers, Union is able to
avoid raising "shelf prices".
