Big convention set for July in Queen City 14
There it a wide interest
among members of the
National Newspaper
Association in the joint NNA-
CCNA Convention set for
Toronto next July, according to
Andy McLean, CCNA
President, on his return from
the NNA Convention in Hot
Springs, Arkansas.
Mr. McLean publisher of The
Huron Expositor, Seaforth,
together with Bill Kennedy of
the Durham (Ont.) .Chronicle,
who is Canadian chairman of
the convention committee, ex-
tended a . formal invitation to
the mer0ers of the American
association at the NNA
meeting. At the same time,
greetings were extended on
behalf of Prime Minister Pierre
Elliott Trudeau and Premier
Wm. Davis of Ontario.
The National Newspaper
Association represents 7000
community newspapers across
the United States. For the first
time, the Association is holding
its i:onvention outside the coun-
try, and the Convention in
Toronto in July 24 - 28 next
year will be the first time
newspaper associations in the
countries have co-operated a
joint gathering. The event at
the new Four Seasons Hotel in
Toronto is expected to attract
2,000 delegates from across
Canada and the United States.
Mr. McLean, who was elec-
ted President of the Canadian
Community Newspapers
Association at the Annual Con-
vention in Calgary, is a former
_Member of Parliament, and has,
a family history in the com-
munity newspaper business
going back more than 100 years.
He recently returned from at-
• tendance at federation
meetings in Saskatoon, Sask.
and Moncton, N.B., and sees
1974 as a year of strong growth
for the C.C.N.A. as the
Christmas
seals need
support
A total of 34,963 letters with
Christmas Seals have been for-
warded to Huron and Perth
County homes by the Huron
Perth Tuberculosis and
Res pir-atory ----- _ Disease
Association members were in- ,
formed at a meeting of the
Association held in Seaforth.
To date $16,772.31 has been
received. The report was
presented by Ralph Goren.
Rev. Garbutt Smith presided
at the meeting when routine
reports were given by Mrs.
Edith Fisher, Mitchell; Miss
Eileen O'Brien, Goderich;
Ralph Goren, . Stratford and
Tom Leiper, Londesboro.
Miss O'Brien said that
physical conditioning courses in
the Red Cross Rooms are con-
tinuing for both adults and
children with Linda Clarke in-
structing. A Respiratory
Technologist has been super-
vising the Association's Horne
Care Units on, leisure time.
Financial assistance had also
been given several persons suf-
fering with respiratory disease.
Mrs. Fisher told the meeting
that the "Ecologist of the Year
1973" Teresa Ondrejicka of
Exeter along with runners-up
Kevin Argue of Northwestern,
Stratford, and Anita Ellis, Cen-
tral, Stratford, would be
presented with avvards at a
Christmas Assembly in South
Huron Secondary School,
Exeter. Anti-smoking activities
were continuing.

Joe Ashfield of the Whitewood
Herald was elected as the third
CCNA director from that
association. This reflects a
Saskatchewan membership
growth to over 76 newspapers
since federation. -
