Brownies and Guides prepare
for Christmas season of service
Christmas is getting closer
and everyone is scampering
around wrapping up their
Christmas plans. In Goderich,
it is the same for the Brownies,
Girl Guides and Rangers. With
the Christmas Day drawing
closer the busy seasonhas
arrived.
In the Brownies. of
Goderich's 1st pack, led by
Brown Owl Ann Knox, the girls
will be busy working on Christ-
mas gifts for the senior citizens.
The Brownies 2nd pack,
working under Brown Owl
Diane Buchanan, will be
hosting the Annual Brownies
Christmas Party, set for
December 14, and also a
Children's Aid Society Christ-
mas Family party. They are
also making Christmas cards
and gifts to present at
Maitland Manor.
Brown Owl Sally McEwan of
the third pack, is instructing
her girls in organizing a pic-
ture -story mural for the Knox
Presbyterian'Church Christmas
Concert.
In the future,' they are plan-
ning a guided tour through
their church, with their
Minister explaining the impor-
tance of the church structure
and religion as a whole.
The Brownies 4th pack,
guided, by Brown Owl Sherrill
Worsell, are occupied with the
Brownies float entry in the.
Santa Claus Parade, on Decem.-
ber Ist. The parents have been
invited to work with the
students on this project, based
on Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs.
Among some of their plans,
they are working on a "good
turn" for Christmas.
While the Brownies„ are
arranging their perfect Christ-
mas, the Goderich Girl Guides
are also getting into the Christ-
mas spirit.
The Guides 1st company un-
der the supervision of Sylvia
Brady, are preparing .for
Christmas.
Stridents in Grades 4 through
8 at St. Mary's Roman Catholic
Separate School and about 60
visiting students front St.
Joseph's Separate School at
Kingsbridge were treated to a
morning of theater on Mpnday
when the Stratford Children's
Theater paid a visit to St.
Mary's School.
`1'he two member cast, con-
sisting of Artistic Director Ron
East and Wendy Gorling, have
.dust completed two years of ac-
ting studies in France.
Mr. East took over the Strat-
ford Children's Theater on
September 1 of this year and
after Christmas it is hoped the
troupe will stage a larger show
featuring five performers.
The type of show presented
to the students on Monday was
• once quite common in Europe
according to the theater group.
The performance is divided
into three sections - Baal
Masks, which consist of an
evolutionary sequence and a
mask contre mask sequence,
Commedia dell'arte, or comedy
of the people and clowns.
in the first stage the group is
concerned with the variety' of
characters which can be drawn
from one mask by changing the
body relationship to the mask
or by changing the body
rhyt hm.
The second stage consisted of
three, sequences, the first in-
volving a simple lazzo which
could be called "platform about
face" the second the more for-
mal traditional character of
Brighella who comes from Italy
and the sixteenth century. He
was the father of such charac-
ters as Falstaff, Sir Toby Belch
and iseven a distant relative to
Jackie Gleason, according to
the Children's Theater group.
The third is a shorter lazzo
involving Mildred who comes
on to change scenes, gets in-
terrupted, decides to strike, sets
the stage and leaves. These
characters (Mortimer and
Mildred) originated in the
Italian comedy with the zanni
or extra who used to perform
many functions from acrobat to
scene changer.
Everyone knows what a
clown is but, as in the case of
the presentation on Monday, he
is not commonly thought of as
a mask. Even without the red
nose the quality of the mask
remains, the troupe says, with
such famous clowns as Buster
Keaton (with his celebrated
dead pan expression) the -Marx
brothers (with their individual
eccentric traits) and Charlie
Chaplin (as an innocent
moustached waif).
The script of the presentation will only emerge when
is built from improvisation. A mances are over,"
theme,was , presented,
situationcreated and finally
the text written.
"This script is unfinished,
Mr. East explains. "It will
evolve and change during per-
formances'and a finished piece
