out what about performance of vehicles actually, in
hands• of the average driver, operating in typical
ryday driving conditions?
according tee a survey of 1,370 privately -owned and
rated cars throughout the United States, vehicles of
0s are running about twice as clean ' as models built
r to 1968: --
The survey, conducted .by Champion Spark Plug Com-
, showed the following results:

Reason for the cleaner -running car, according to Cham-
p, is the anti -pollution systems designed and installed
the car manufacturer.
Due to these new devices, prospects for rapid imprbve-
nt in the nation's air quality are excellent. According
the Motor Vehicle Manufacturer's Association, 17 out
20 cars now on the road .have some form of emission

The .Champion tests, conducted in nine U.Sr cities,
owed that engine maintenance contines to be vital to
eeping emissions low.
In the Phoenix tests, there was an average reduction
t50 per cent in CQ and 40 per cent in HC at idle after
e -up.
':Similar reductions in harmful emissions were noted in
over tests as well. -
Other cities participating in the test were Dayton, Ohio;
w Orleans, Louisiana, Chicago, Illinois; San Raman,
ifornia; Norman, Oklahoma; Dallas, Texas and Mem-
is, Tennessee.

A Phoenix, Arizona, shopping center was among the nine nationwide locales where Champion
Spark Plug Company conducted emissions testas_ lust year. Champion technicirl services per-
sonnel, working with the Arizona State Health Department, found that after tune-up all
Phoenix cars tested could pass emission standards. In uddi ion, there was an average 56 per-
cent drop in carbon monoide and an average reduction o`40 percent in unburned hydro-
carbons after 'tune-up. In Phoenix, as well us the rest of the country, Champion learned that
new cars are 50 percent cleaner, emissions -wise, than tlreir:pre-1968 predecessors.

More Tire Mileage
Let your wife do the driv-
ing.
According to Goodyear
Tire and Rubber Company,
women average'30,000 miles
on tires while men average
only. 20,000, \with some men
getting as ,little as 12,000
miles.
Of course the area of the
country, road conditions
and driving speeds influ-
ence tire wear.
Most wives . don't travel
70 mph to the grocery store
so maybe this explains
Goodyear's findings.
The motorist can keep
right on driving a car with
a faulty exhaust system,
but he's risking his life to
do so — especially in the
winter.
Contrary to safety rules,
many people drive with
closed windows. Thus, with-
out proper ventilation, a
motorist would breathe poi-
sonous fumes, which might
seep into the passenger
compartment -- should an
exhaust pipe or the muffler
be defective.
Mufilerimanufacturers es-
timate that over 75 percent
of cars over one year old
should have some kind of
exhaust system parts re-
placement. It may be only
a 'clamp, but a loose clamp
near a joint can be crucial.
It takes only a few min-
utes to have the" exhaust
system .checked, which can
be done while a car is on
the lift for lubrication or
other winterizing service.
When a car is raised, rup-
tures or weak spots in the
exhaust pipes can be seen
— and your service man card
check the mufflerfor clog-
ging. Deterioration of.. the
exhaust system ismainly
caused by condensation of „.
the noxious vapors within
the pipes.
Unfortunately, few per-
sons ask to have the system
inspected until a rusted tail
pipe starts rattling — or
the noise of a ruptured
muffler cannot be ignored.
Noise caused by holes in
exhaust parts may be slight
at first. The person who
drives in heavy traffic with
closed windows may not
recognize that the sound is
coming from his own car.
Meanwhile, he is a candi-
date for CO poisoning.
Only by a thorough check
of rthe exhaust system can
the motorist be sure_he is
not being ,exposed tthe
deadly fumes.' The great
danger is that carbon mon-
oxide is colorless, odorless
and tasteless. It creeps up
on its victims. The body can
collect it over a period of
time -- therefore, a fatal
dose is not necessarily a
single large dose.
charges of air and fue , c
ting, down on engi a effi-
ciency and gas mileage.
The muffler handles a cer-
tain flow rate ..of exhaust
gases. As these gases pass
through a series of holes,
baffles and resonance cham-
bers, the muffler reduces
the pressure and cools the
waste gases before they're
passed into the atmosphere.
Any restriction in the ex-
haust system will cause the
^' engine to perform poorly —
and carbon and corrosive
matter will accumulate.
Thisclogging also hastens
deterioration of the muffler
and pipes.
The engine trouble caused
by excessive exhaust gases,
in addition to the possible
harmful effects on the car's
occupants, makes it easy
to understand why one
should keep the exhaust
system in good condition:
Exhaust gases also cause
poor engine performance.
When not fully cleared from
the manifold, these fumes
tend to . dilute the fresh
Rust is very= expensive.
It could cost you hundreds of dollars
to.repair a rusty car. Or it could cost
you hundreds of dollars to trade it in.
So before you spend a lot of money
"'.. on a new car, you should spend some
time finding out how rust and other
envirdnmental attack will kill it.
We've written a book on the subject. It's called 'Your new car and the
environment'.
It describes simply, the clamaging.effects on your' car. Of moisture,
'saltiaden snow, industrial fallout, the surf's rays and spilled mustard.
But, more important, it tells what you can do to prevent all this destruction.
Our book will take only minutes to read. But it could add years to the life
of your new car. And save you hundreds of dollars.
Send or phone for it. And read it.
