trying tricycles, before.their interest is centered to something else. Allison is drawn to the
doll carriages while Jamie thinks of wagons and sleds. While the children are doing their

Christmas decorating can be
one of the great Yuletide joys
and some original decor for the
season can enhance that en-
joyment many fold.
H-o►w „..about making a , rope
tree? It is really quite :simple
and the end result can make an
ideal item for a centerpiece, on
top of the piano or on; the
fireplace mantel.
To produce this .interesting
item wind a continuous pike of
starched jute rope around a
cardboard form. It takes about
100 feet of heavyweight jtite, a
quart of liquid starch, some
cardboard, waxed paper, a
needle and thread.
For the form cut. cardboard
triangles about 15 inches high
with.a ,base of 10 to 12 inches.
Tape them together so they
form a pyramid shape and
cover the outside with, waxed
paper'.
Soak the rope in undiluted
starch and wrap back and forth
over the form in vertical rows
until there are about •six rows
'on each side. Add eight or 10
additional, rows around ,the
base and then wind to the top
leaving intervals xof ap-
proximately one-half inch het -
ween the ?spirals.
While 'the rope is. still wet,
hand sew with thread through
the border in a wide zigzag
pattern securing each of the
vertical rows .where they cross.
Anchor corner crossings and
then allow' '''to dry completely
before removing the cardboard
form.'
The stand for your new tree
is a dowel or any similar piece
of wood 17 to 20 inches in
height nailed to a five inch
square piece of wood. if you
wish the..stand may he dressed
up with some walnut stain.
The tree can then be spray
painted green, or any other
color for that matter, and
decorated with stars or flowers
made using the same method.
Tiny gift shop bells and
decorations are available at
many retail outlets.
