No doubt about 1t, we take ourselves too seriously `1'e need to look at oursel\es with some amusement or else we,. may be endangered into thinking we ha\ e t he last and final word on everything. in- cluding God. 'You're so heart 1` opinionated,' one roan stormed at another as the\ discussed religion, 'especial k w ben you don't agree with rale' Ah so Man\ of us like to think we're Lound the ons\ road leading to heaven and if perchance there are a few others, not of our thinking, who do make the grade (t o tea\ en, I mean). .well, we still feel our 'enlightenment' is much greater than theirs. Let us never he tooled into thinking that there are not a nurnber of w ass in which Christians an work our their faith. God, t hank goodness. Is .not interested in dull unitorntlty. Remember how Paul harp- dled diversity in Christ lair practice in the New Testament church. Sonic, of the Christians at Rome and Corinth would not eat meat that had been of- ,tered to idols for fear they would seem to be santion ing idolatry. Others said since the idol gods- didn't exist it wouldn' t do any harm 'V4'e have sone. Lord.. anti Master,' they insisted, 'and He has grv'n us to4>d for our good. I shall eat it and he grateful.' So here we have a difference in Christian practice from people who interpret the will of God differently; Take note of how Paul handl Is it. 'Don't criticise a brother Christian- for having different ideas from .-ours about what is right and wrongs—For instance. don't argue wtrh him about whether or nor to eat meat, that 'has been offered to idols...Those who think it is all right to eat such meat mint not look down on those who won't_ And if you are one oethuse who won't, don't - find fault with those who do For (god has ac- cepted them to he his children. They are God's servants, nt,t yours. They are responsible ru Him, not ill you.' He goes'„n to say that God is pleased with hot.h attitudes providing they are held rn- scientiously. 'The man who eats meat eats it as*a gift..from the L,trd, and he thanks God for it The rnan who refrains from eating does so out of anxiety to please the Lord, and he too is thankful.' What a wonderful, liberal and' humane approach It vividly points out the priceless gift of Christian freedom Christian behave our, in all its variety, is cemented to pleasing (sod, which is the supreme pat.. tern for all of us. It frees us, then, from taking a last stand on our ow11 at- titudes and from i the ►lecessitv of criticising how other Christians work out their obedience And 1t forces us to admit that it is just possible they n1av sometimes discern the will of God even more (lears\ than we do!
