Mr. Shepherd said he will
study how computers can ..be
used to summarize long texts
and prepare indexes while his

technique where computers can

language to another.
The dean `said another two
candidates will \be. accepted
into the program in spring
followed by two more next fall.
"We'll work our . way up
gradually, he said. No more
than 12 students will be
enrolled at ' one time.
He described the research as
"a tremendous task that would
end by benefitting everyone
such as journ-alists,
businessmen and educators as
well as librarians.
"In .Canada it would be
especially important because
we're basically a technological
country'and not much research
is •done here," he said.
Mr. Cameron said students
at the school have access to a
rare hook collection with texts
dating back to the 13th century.
Many are early encyclopedias
and dictionaries "which teach
• the students an appreciation
for the development of library
science," according to .Mr.
Cameron.
