Bell Telephone subscribers in Eastern Canada received an grange card with their monthly telephone bill. It read, in part, "If, you are thinking of obtaining telephone equipment from anyone but th telephone company, check with us first. Unauthorized connec- tions can result in a disconnec- tion of service.'' A few weeks before that war- ning went out automatic telephone answering units went On sale in this area, as well as the rest of eastern Canada, for a; little as $149 and, up to Oc- tober 15,. 275 of them were in service in the Huron -Grey - Bruce region.. The units are manufactured in Japan and sold in Canada by the Harding Corporation. Ken McCosh of Saltford represents that company in the Huron - Grey -Bruce -area and reports sales as being most encouraging frowning on the whole matter. The little orange cards were the first public flare up of a battle which has been brewing between Bell Canada Ltd. and the Harding Corp. Automatic telephone, an- swering systems, using tape to record incoming messages, are 'the main facet of the Harding. business. • Other companies however are making and selling the gadgets as well. The Department of Com- munications' last fall estimated there were 15,000 devices con- nected. to ,Canadian telephones but according to Bell's estimation -75 percent Of them' are connected illegally. To say the least Bell Canada has been unwilling to have the little '.devils connected to their hardware but in the meantime Harding Corp. salesmen have been out selling lots of them, nearly 800 each month. The desires have .beers' around for some time but the recent boom has resulted from a drastic fall in prices which retailed any -where from $60.0 to `1000 only last year but are now on the market' for prices ranging from $149 to $500. To make matters. worse, for Bell Canada at least, the big volume dealers ,,are beginning to see a market for the units as well.. Eatons of Canada Ltd. recently put in an order to the Harding Corp. and started a -splashy advertising campaign to push.their new merchandise. The ad says, "You wit never again have to miss any impor- tantcalls. Designed to work on spy telephone system. Plugs into any four prong telephone extension jack and can be con- nected by the telephone com- pany at an extra charge." In that last statement lies the hitch. Around that point the disagreement between Harding and Ma Bell has grown up. Bell is most unhappy about the .equip_ment being connected to its lines unless a Bell ap- proved couple is used. The system costs the telephone sub- scriber $9 for installing the couple and $2 per month rent. As the advertisement says however the unit plugs into any extension jack. The question then comes to the prospective user's mind. "Why pay Ma Bell a $9 installation fee and $2 per month_ rent?" Next came Glenn Mogk of Stratford with 20 hits, Mervin Batkin of Clinton with 19 birds, John Anderson of Kippen and Ashley Gilbert of Goderich with 17 hits each and- Don Bricker of Goderich, with 16 birds. What is most interesting is that none of the 275 units now in use thrtyughout Mr. McCosh's region have been cut off and' he feels they aren't about to be. Ma Bell has been blustering perhaps but not taking any teal action. Until she does, and the mat- ter is resolved in the courts, no- one can say for sure just who is right and who is wrong.
