About 250 pigs were
destroyed and over $40,000
damage done to a barn on the
farm of Charlie Wain of RR I,
Bayfield after a fire swept
through the structure about
7:30 Tuesday 'morning.
The fire, which broke out on
the farm on Highway 21, four
miles north of Bayfield, was
believed to have started near
the electrical service and
levelled the 30 foot by 50 foot
barn.
High winds fanned the blaze
and the'Bayfield Fire Depart-
ment were able to save only a
few of the 250 pigs that were in
-the barn at the time. The direc-
tion of the wind, however, kept
the blaze away from the house.
Fire also spread into an ad-
joining silo that was filled with
shelled corn, and the corn was
still smouldering at presstime.
Also lost in the blaze was a
harvester and some equiptnent.
Much of the loss is covered by ,
insurance.
Ron Klages, Chief Technologist at Goderich Alexandra Marine and General Hospital seems
well pleased with the new microscope which was donated recently by the Ahmeek Chapter
of .I.O.D.E. While Ron, seated, examines the piece of equipment, Mrs. J.C. Cutt, services
secretary, and Mrs. R.H. Neville, Regent, looks things over. Hospital Administrator, Timms
Elliott and Mrs. J.G-Henderson hold the cheque for $1,000 which pays for the microscope.
Its main use Klages states "is to examine cell counts in the blood". (staff photo)

Two letters were before
Goderich Town Council last
Thursday fronn East bank
Buildings Ltd.
The 'first requesting that
$1200. held:._. in t.rust--- for - the
storm sewer. on Christ ina Court
be exchanged Tor a Trust Cer-
tificate or a Bond for $1200 was
referred' to the Administrative
Committee for study.
According to the later, the
money was deposited two years
ago with the town solicitor "to
meet the demands imposed
upon the company at that time
by the Corporation regarding
the storm sewer on Christina
Court".
"It now appears that it will
be many years before an outfall
is provided and the installation
of the sewer is being delayed
until 'his is available" said the
letter.
The second letter concerning
;t+frt►e„ street lights . un Christ ina'
Court was referred to the
Water, Light ,.and Pollution
division of council with power
to act.
.The letter, in part, stated:
"The' officers of the Company
were surprised, indeed, when
they learned of recent press
reports that the residents of
Christina --Court had petitioned
the Corporation for additional
street lighting as never had any
of them indicated to the Com-
pany that the lawn lights were
not adequate light the street.
It has been noted since that not
all the lawn lights are being
used and .it .should•be pointed
Out to these home owners that
regardless of whether the
light comes .from their lawn
lights or from street lights, they
are paying the cost of° the
hydro.
"It is noted, also, that there
has been some complaint that
Bennett St. is not well lighted,
between the Bayfield -Rd. and
Gibbons Street. It 'is further
noted ,that some time .ago an
additional- street light --was in-
stalled on the northwest corner.
There is no need for
duplication here and this extra
light would he more useful if it
were moved further .east on
Bennett St. The company does
not consider it is its respon-
sibility to light Bennett St. as
this street was inadequately
lighted for many years befcire
this subdivision was started.
—It is the opinion of the of-
ficers of this company that the
company's responsibility is
limited to the cost of the fixture
to be installed on the standard
located at the, north end. of
Christina Court. This opinion
was formed after the company
was informed by the then,
Chairman of the Water, Light
avid Pollution cc►mMittee,
Walter Sheardown that it was
the policy of the Corporation to
install and pay the cost of the
pole and the developer pay the
cost of the fixture. The Com-
pany's officers would he
agreeable to meet with the
committee at any time to
discuss and choose the type of
light -fixture to be used here."
"I wonder if' that isn't just
reversed," said ..,Councillor
Dave Gower, speaking' about
the line in the letter where it
was claimed the town could
pay the cost of, the pole and the
installation while the developer
paid the light fixture.
Reeve Deb SI ewfelt, former
Chairman of- the Water, Light
and Po! lu t ion Division of coun-
cil, said the agreement would
have to be checked once again ;,
to determine this matter.
Shewfelt did agree it was
necessary to brighten the ap-
proach to Christiana Court.
Councillor Frank Walkom
-said in his opinion, Chr-i.sti ia-
Court was well lighted and ad-
ded it was the -"ideal situation
if everyone had the"Jights
