This parable is a warning not to mise the invitation, and the opportunity to enjoy the hap- piness which following Jesus brings. The warning of the parable was needed for few were ready to follow. Many failed to be alert to the 'coming into the world of the Son of God. There is another point worth noting. The warning about preparation is connected with 'tarrying'. 'As the bridegroom was a very long time, they all fell 'asleep'. The foolish maidens woke to find their oil was gone. They were prepared for the short term joys of life; but not for those which deman- ded reserves and patience, im- patience and being unwilling to wait; and .the failure to have moral resources to draw upon, shuts many people out of the joys of life. The people who always live 'at the end of their tether' as it were. Bayfield In the familiar hymn 'Take time to he _holy' we`areremin- ded that 'The world rushes on' but how often do we heed to 'Take time to be holy?. Im- mediate satisfactions are all some people care about. Like Esau who sold his birthright for a bowl of soup! He was too impatient to wait for spiritual blessings, like Jacob. Rather than take time to be holy he preferred a dish of 'lentils. Surely this parable has this to teach us today. . that following Jesus makes for hap- piness. There are many, who (like the Pharisees) think that to be miserable and of a sad countenance is to be holy; and a stair expression is proof of piety!' Jesus says we must be prepared for the lasting joys which He has to offer, and not to go spiritually asleep, or we will miss the wedding feast.... the happiness of the Kingdom of God. Crusade coming in spring Nev. Marney Patterson will be conducting an "Invitation to Live" Crusade in Goderich from March 29 to April 8 next year. An Itinerant evangelist since 1966, he was the Canadian delegate to the World Congress on Evangelism In Berlin, Germany in October of that year, In 1969, he at- tended the American Congress on Evangelism as a delegate and In the 1970 Canadian Congress on Evangelism, he served as executive secretary. He,has also lectured on evangelism at Wycliffe Theological College In Toronto and the Protestant Episcopal Seminary, Alexan- dria, Virginia, USA. 'Every true friend is a glim- pse of God', says the poet. Surely we all agree that a good friend__ is among our choicest possessions. In each Of us is born the need for someone to accept us on equal terms. Someone with whom there are no barriers...who is not shocked by our short -comings, who sticks by us through our trials and whose .laughter breaks out- joyously at our glad "times. Someone who can share our most craven. fears and our wildest hopes—and yes, even our blazing . fury and in- dignation. - Of course, with friendship there 'comes, as someone has said, 'an awful` responsibility'. We owe our friends ,a mighty allegiumapd,-we_must use the greatest po sable ca,re in prepef, ving them.' Even so, there is the possibi 'ty of having the com- fort of friend 1 taken away. Wha - about our friendship with Jesus? He said, "I have not called you servants, I have called you friends." Amazing isn't it that He is willing to call us friends even when we rebel against him, disobey him, and often do not want to know him? Christ is the friend we can count on to the end and the one every Christian should cultivate to know better throughout his whole life. Well, how does one develop that friendship? How do you cultivate a. friendship with someone you can't see? Michael Green in his book, New Life, New Lifestyle; suggests two ways. He points out that people who love each other and who are separated keep in touch by writing letters and by using the telephone. He goes on to say that the Bible is like an open letter from Christ.,. In it He tells all about Himself, and His plans for our good. In it, also, is advice about- love, sell' discipline, as well as promi:tes, commands, ,,and examples for us to follow andel warnings to heed. In other words, Mr. Green believes it is important for every .Christian to read his Bible...not making a fetish .out of it, but .with a sincere desire to get to know and develop a friendship with our Lord. Then, too, as with a human friendship, we want to share our lives with Christ by talking to him. While it is good and perhaps even essential to have special or structured prayer times, still, there are other ways in speaking to him. We often get the urge to talk with a good„ friend and know we can pick up the phone any time of the day and he or she will be there to listen. It is even' more so with Christ. He is never out when his' phone rings. At any given, moment we can stop to thank flim, ask for strength and help, or beg His forgiveness. There it is then. Christ is our Friend. But friendships need to be cultivated. To make sure this one doesn't fall. into disrepair, thrbugh neglect we must keep in touch with -flim and He with' us. Reading 'the Bible' and prayer are good ways to do it.
