weeks, the growth hor-
.detlectable and at ten
half weeks, the thyroid
renal glands have begun
on. Also at ten weeks,
been possible to detect
and record the child's heart-
beat.
By the end of the third
month, the unborn. child has
become very active. He can now
kick kis legs, turn his feet, curl
and fan his toes, make a fist,
move hia-thumb, bend his wrist,
turn his head, squint, frown,
open his mouth, and press his
lips tightly together. The finger-
nails. appear and he starts to
urinate.
The child grows very rapidly
during the fourth month of life.
His weight increases six tines
and he grows 8-10 inches in
length.
In 'the fifth month, the un-
born child will become one foot
tall, and weigh approximately
one pound. Hair begins to grow
on his head and eyebrows and
a fringe- of eyelashes appgear.
The child's skeleton hardens
and the muscles .become
stronger.
According to the report, the
study of the unborn child is a
relatively new science and yet,
• in its short existence, it has put
into perspective what the ob-
stetrician has .known for
years—i.e. when working with
the pregnant woman, there are
two patients to be considered.
Recent research supports the
notion that the child in its
mother is a distinc(individual
in need of the most diligent
study and care.
Both patients, mother and
child, require and challenge the
fullest expertise of the medical
art. .
The meeting was attended by
men of the medical profession
as well as men of the clergy,
housewives, students and ex-
pect'ant" mothers.
The basic aims of the Pro -
Life group are to inform the
general.public that the unborn
child is a human being; of the
medical, moral, social, and
psychological effects of abor-
tion; of Canadian abortion
facts; and of the. alternatives. to
abortion. -
Another aim of _the group is
to work for changes in the basic
conditions which make abor-
tion an accepted alternative.
They also 'work• towards
changes„in public opinion to in-
crease respect for human life.
