Huron health unit launches investigation
Officials of the Huron County
'Health Unit are in the process
of conducting an investigatign
into the disposal of septic tank
waste by companies and in-
dividuals involved in the
business of pumping or
cleaning the units.
The Health Unit mailed let-
ters to about 10 of the known
pumping operations operating
within the County asking them
Bluebirds ..:
(Continued from page 1.A)
seems certain that the
bluebirds can be brought back,
providing there is careful plan-
ning and continuous work over
the years.
The Bayfield group has plans
to work with the schools and
young people generally.
"Word has just come through
that the Bayfield groups ap-
plication for $5.000. to under-
write this work has been ap-
proved under New Horizons
auspices. This will enable the
purchase of lumber, steelaposts,
(where necessary) and other
supplies. No,remuneration is
allowed to the retired persons
working on the project,"
MacDougall said. •
P
The Bayfield council has set
aside a room in the Town Hall
for box building work.
The executives of the
Bayfield Area Bluebird Society
are Harvey MacDougall,
president; Phillip DuBoulay,
vice-president; Mrs. Frank
Burch, secretary; and Brig.
Morgan Smith, treasurer.
Directors are Mrs. Gwen
Pemberton, Miss Jessie Met-
calf, Mrs. Robert Blair; Miss
Dorothy Reinke, -Dick Moore
and Reg York.
When directors were young,
the bluebird was quite common
through this area.
It was particularly welcome
as the harbinger of spring, with
the males coming north in
March and the females
following an April.
With its cheery song, its
lovely light blue back and rusty
red breast, it has often been
called the continent's most
loved bird," said MacDougall.
The name "Bluebird Of Hap-
piness" has been well applied
to this bird."
The Bayfield group feel that
manythings of their youth
which have gone, cannot be
brought back. Not so the
bluebird.
The starlings, the loss of the
old rail fences, pesticides, many
things have made it difficult for
the bluebirds to survive.
but if they are given "a leg
up" with the building of
nesting boxes to take the place
of the woodpecker holes in the
old cedar posts, the bluebird
can be brought back," said
BABS President::.-: Harvey
MacDougall.

The booklet also lists those
things which could be accom-

forts of the province", counties
and cities; creation of a new
local tourist identity by the use
of distinctive signs, colors,
logos and landscaping to
develop a distinctive local

involve local people who know

"The tourists are coming,"
the brochure concludes:- "Will
we be ready?"

tion with the location of duns -
ping sites.
The Unit would also like to
hear from any operators who
did not receive notification of
the survey before the deadline
of November 15. All sites' must.
be registered with the County
Health Unit by that date, Chief
Health inspector J1nt McCaul
explained.
Those who do not comply
with the request are subject to
prosecution by the Health l!nit
under provisions in the Ontario
Health Act.
All dumping sites must be
located at least 200 yards from
the nearest -dwelling .and... a
similar distance from any well.
spring, pond, Si rears► or other
water course.
After registration inspectors
with the unit will look over the
dumping sites ,to see that they,
comply with regulations tet
down in the Health Act.
The Huron/ Health Unit is
also in the process of either
bringing up to standard, or
closing, three restaurants,
ac rc►ss the county. The food,
premises, found not to be in
compliance with the Food
Premises Act, . are located at
Lortdesboro, Brussels and Kin-

in-
burn.
Mr. McCaul explained that a
new, revised version (March of
this year) of the Food Premises
Regulations has been issued
and, combined with more ef-
ficient staffing the Health Unit,
will be persuing the matter, ini&
the case of restaurants, more
thoroughly.
Mr. McCaul also said that
representatives of the Health
Unit are involved with a Con'-
sumer
on-sumer Protection program at
the Go.derich and District
Collegiate Institute.
He said he was very pleased
with the reception the Health
Unit presentation received and
with the students themselves.
"Their questions on our com-
ments were right to the point,"
he explained.
