BY REV. PETER G. ST. DON..
CHAIRMAN OF THE
1 GODERICI-I,.. MINISTERIAL
1; ASSOCIATION
1 The story is told of a soldier in the
1 „Ati erican Third Army who was sent to a
-r ` -- ' rest camp after a period of active service.
' ' When he returned to his outfit, .he wrote a
1.---'
" letter to General George Patton and
ithanked him for the splendid care he had
,received. General Patton wrote back that
(• for thirty-five years he had sought togive
i all the comfort and conveniences he could
to his men, and added that this was the
first letter of thanks he had received in all
his years in the army.

There are few points at which human
1. ._ nature_ Is _more incising. thaix,,.i.n /auk of
gratitude. Parents must constantly say to
1 children who have received some gift,
N"Now what do you say?" As we grow older
,g• we we -can become hardened to the good
'tt things of life and do not think of thanking
ci
1 - God who is the giver of "every good gift
and every perfect gift."
The best rule is the one given by Paul,
"In everything give thanks," and
especially "Thanks be unto God for bis,un-
speakable gift."
tAs we look back on this past year in our
Community, 1 am sure that we _a11 have
many things'for which to give God thanks.
For example; the newsmen of our country
expressed a concern for the need of a good
year for crops if we were to eat properly as
CanadianN well recall the news media
making mention of possible food rationink
0 right here in Canada if we did not have
good harvests. Perhaps we have forgotten
these things due to the fact that we have
had a good summer and autumn and the
crops. all over Canada have been quite
good.
When we look and read aboutthe•,civil
strife that is taking place in many,coun-
tries, do we take time to thank God for the
peace and freedom of religion that we
,' have? 1 am sure that you could add much
to the list of areas in which we could be
thankful. For example, have you ever stop -
r ped to thank God for eyesight?
A group of visitors at a summer resort
had watched a sunset from the gallery of
the hotel. One man had lingered until the
last glow faded and had seemed thrilled
through and through by the beauty of it
. all. One guest, more observant than the
rest, wondered about this, and so at the
supper she said to this man, who sat next
.:t"o-her,• "You- certainly did enjoy that sun-
set.,Are you an artist?" "No, madam, I'm a
leplumber, but 1 was blind for five years."
came the man's reply.
1i Sir Moses Montetfiore, the Hebrew
philanthropist, had as the motto of his
I family, Think and Thank. In the old
Anglo=Saxon language thankfulness
means Thinkfulness. Thinking of all God's
goodnesses draws forth gratitude. Let us be
t: sure to think of all God's blessing4 to us
and let us go back to say ,thanks.
