TIER death was particularly horrible; according to .the
11 inquest jury.
The 23 -year-old victim was dressed in a nightgown and
a short time before had treated her wig with an aerosol can
of hair spray: -
She lit a cigarette probably with a lighter and the
night-gown caught fire. She ran to the bathroom and sortie--
how got off the burning.:gown and threw it into the bathtub
where it burned, scorching the shower curtain. She stum-
bled back to the bedroom and collapsed on the bed, where
" she 'was found - dead.
She had suffered severe third-degree burns to 40 per
cent of her body.
A friend told the jury that she was not "just a careless
but a hazardous smoker."
"Make the public more aware of the terrible dangers
of flash fires combined with smokin" and the use of
matches or lighters," the jury recommended.
This is a fire prevention message, directed especially
to all who smoke, particularly in situations like the -above.

This rise is due in some extent to normal
population increases, and to is degree the in-
creased density of urban living but mainly is
the result of thejlmpersonal attitude that fire
won't happen; to them `or their family.
This year a new theme is being introduced
into the Joint Committee's program. It asks
a .question the;public must individually,• answer.
"Fire. Do you really thl it can't happen
to yeti"
Thought provoking, it directs the responai-
'bility for fire prevention and familypreserva-
tion where it belongs, in a personlazed way.
It should contribute much to offsetting the
.apathetic mood- of many people who continue
to ignore resscnable precautions. Hopefully it
will jar their "I'm alright Jack" philosophy.
