Sheaffer Pen, Spi.deI go
computer for business
Salesmen and retailers han-
dling Sheaffer Pen and Spiedel
products throughout Canada
are now asked not to "bend,,
fold, staple or otherwise
mutilate" their monthly ac-
counts as the accounting system
at the Goderich Sheaffer Pen
Company plant, which
distributes products in this
country, changes over to a com-
puterized billing and stock con-
trol system.
The new data processing unit
is an I.B.M. "System three
Model six" and it carries out
invoicing for both Sheaffer and
Spiedel, computes cost of sales,
completes inventories and
tabulates accounts receivable.
Bill Gardner, Sheaffer. Pen
manager, explains that the new
system provides the company,
with more accurate reporting
on sales and product
classifications. "The system
gives us a better feel of our
business," he notes.
"We could dothe work
manually," he adds, "but the
loss through time and errors
proves to be very costly."
Such a system, Mr. Gardner
says, is excellent for a company

over 1,200 various com-

combinations in the pocket
lines," he points out, "which
m ke it hard to keep track of
sales on each combination
without the computer."
The Sheaffer manager also
explained that the new system
gives officials a quick feel for
the success of new lines being

This will help the parent com-
pany Make decisions regarding
the introduction or phasing out
of product lines around the
-world.
"In the consumer products
field you must have a winner,"
Mr. Gardner said, "because you
are known by your winners."
The weekly reporting system
will help weed out those lines
which fall short.
According to the Sheaffer
manager the change to I.B.M.
in the Goderich accounting
department was uneventful.
"I had people telling me
about all the trouble we were
going to have with the change
over," he recalls, "but we did
six months preparetion before
we ever saw the machines and
there have been very few
problems."
The new accounting system
will not force any layoffs at the
local Sheaffer office, -instead it
has actually represented the
hiring of one additional staff
member.
"We were fortunate to find
Sandra Telford who, moved to
Goderich recently and who had
been trained to operate the
I.B.M. key punch unit," Mr.
Gardner said. "We also trained
one of our staff members, Olive
Shales, who has been with" us
,for about the last 10 years."
J.A. Rosenlund of Goderich
has taken over responsibility
for the new computer depart-
ment at-Sheaffer after working
in the local offices Sales and
Orders Department for two
years.
Mr. Rosenlund had studied
some data processing at college
and,as a result was selected by
Sheaffer for an eight week
training course offered by the
I.B.M. company in Toronto and'
Montreal.
