When the board of governors
of Conestoga College oirApplied
Arts and Technology met at the
Clinton complex last. Monday
they learned that the college
could be in financial difficulty
for the 1974-75 term due to
dropping enrolment at the
school this year.
The college had forecast an
enrolment of 1,482 students at
their Doon, Guelph, Hhrristo n
and Clinton centers but when
the tally was in, figures showed
only 1,373 students registered
for the 1973-74 term.
Grants 'given to the college
are based on the enrolment
figures of the previous year and
if the enrolmentgoes up next
year the college could face
many problems finding mono
to Support the increased num-
ber of students. The 1972-73
enrolment was 1,380.
Vice-president of the
academics, Aubrey Hager, told
the board meeting that 'the
dropping enroltnent will have
no effect on the financial
situation this year hut he•war-
ned that if enrolment increases
substantially there
could be pPohlerns.
Mr. Hager also said that
Conestoga was one of the few
community colleges .in Ontario
which faced a dropping
enaelment this year. Ile
suggested that the reduction of
university entrance
requirements might_ have
drawn sone potential college
students away from Conestoga.
A lack of public transpor-
tation at the Clinton and Doon
centers of the college were also
'referred to as additional
problems that could have had
an effect on enrolment.
The basic problem faced by
the school is that with more
students one year the school
would get more money the
following year hut with a drop
in enrolment one year and an
increase during the following
term, the college could find it-
self forced to operate under -a
condition Of more students and
less money.
