Last week a small group of
people met to discuss Summer -
fest '73 and '74. I must say a
.larger group was, expected
but - it was ever thus!
These few, being really in-
terested, had gathered infor-
mation, discussed the last Sum-
merfest'and took notes of ideas
and suggestions for next year.
It was the feeling of- the
majority that closing The
Square to wheel traffic worked
very well, as people wandered
around and back and forth,
were more relaxed and had fun
hunting bargains.
The Sidewalk Sales were in
and -the
to spend
general, excellent
people were ready
their money.
The detour signs, a block
from The Square, chased many
away from the excellent
parking spyts in those closed -in
blocks.
Next year, they will be
clearly marked for parking. The
art and crafts for Art Mart in
Courthouse Park were con
spicuous by their absence,
This was due -all agreed -to a
letter sent out early by the
Goderich Art Club to all the
crafts people on their lists,
saying there would be no Art
Mart this year—or words to

that effect. At any rate Craft-
speople said, wrote or phoned,
that because of this they made
arrangements for other shawl`
about this same date.
The letter was misleading, as
the Art Club=I think ---wished
only to notify everyone that
they could no longer sponsor
this fine show. Of course, few
people ever read a whole letter.
and the suggestion that Sum-
merfest or others. might sponsor
it was lost entirely.
It was very poor judgment on
the part of those responsible for
the letter, and unfortunate, for
Goderich that they hadn't
discussed it first with .others
whom they knew would not
allow such tourist attraction to
drop. h'
However, craftspeople have
been notified that Art Mart
along with Summerfest, will be
the same week in July next
wear and so I hope that answers
rht questions regarding the Art
Mart.
It was great to hear of the
feelings of the 'merchants in
regards to a better show next
year. It is felt that everkne on
The Square should be respon-
"'rsible for his portion of The
Square and if they couldn't
have Sidewalk Sales, they
could have something or
someone using the space.
For ex pie ,oe O'Brien
could nbt have his meat
business • outdoors—but
Joe—some 'teeners might have
enjoyed selling hot dogs and
wieners in that space. Then too
the banks are sort of tied
up—altho', the Bank of Mon- •
treat -really joine-d- in on fhe
festivities—we thank them.
Clowns or musicians spon-
sored by' a Bank would have
been nice as ,would a. Barber-
shop Quartet in front of the

GODERICH
ROTARY
CHARITY BALL
NOV. 10th
Summerfest is trying to
promote Goderich and more
than the merchants and
organizations should be in-
volved.
Goderich has
'dustries—why are they not
taking part?
We hope to hear .from each
and every corner of Goderich
with ideas for a REAL big
Summerfest '74. Speak up so
that advertising may be started
early --now.
This should also be building
up to a big -Big -BIG -week of ac-
tivity as we have our 150th Cen-
tennial of the founding of
Goderich coming in 1977—only
three years away.
So, something for all to think
about.
I don't think it is too early to
begin to let friends and
relatives, who are far,far away,
know about Old Home Week
'77 and give them a chance to
arrange to come home that
year. Just thinking ahead!
Goderich is a beautiful town,
let's use a little more en-
thusiasm . and make it known
we - WANT people to come
here, live here, set up their in-
dustries here . THINK about
it—it's no longer a town for
retired folksf only. Let's BUILD
more than houses.
Love,
Martha.
