The original barges were pur- chased by the _joc•al company in 1964 for storage although they had been leased from the Patterson Steamship Lines for two years previous to that. In 1933 the "Elmdale" changed her name from "Clif- ford F. Moll" to "Standard Port{land Cement" but under that name it wasn't all smooth sailing for the vessel. In May of 1960, while ap- proaching Detroit with 8,000 tons of carbonite, she was ram- med by the "August Ziesing" the engine room. Sailors working in the engine room had to scramble free as tons of water poured in filling the chamber. Other sailors jumped overboard, thinking ,the ship was going down in deep water, and the life boats were lowered but when she settled on the muddy bottom the crew was taken back aboard. Her decks were about five feet above water. It took nearly a week to refloat the vessel and clear the channel. She was later towed tot dry dock and the hole -patched. During her 64 years on the lakes she underwent numerous refittings, in addition to the repairs-„ necessary due to the collision, and as part of those refittings was changed from coal to diesel burning. Her days on the open lakes are through but it seems almost a well deserved retirement to lie with the R.G. Sanderson, C.S - Band, E.B. Weldon and Lionel Parsons at moorings in Goderich Harbor. Thirteen hatches line the deck of the "Elmdale" covering five holds which now contain 289,540 bushels of wheat in storage.
