The final production of
Huron Country Playhouse for
the 1973, season was a real
crowd pleaser judging from the
laughter and applause Thur-
sday evening in. the big tent on
the 13 line in Stephen Town-
ship.
The Hand That Cradles The
Rock is a Canadian play by
Warren Graves set in the
Western Provinces. It's a
modern play about 'the
problems of one couple where
the wife is the wage. -earner in
the family and• the husband
stays home to care for the
house and their four-month old
daughter. - -
Rose Fend Alex (short for
Alexandra) Cameron played by
Tom Alway and Jeanne
Beauvais just don't have much
time for each other. She'.._
always away on some exciting
business trip or other and he's
,always tied up with diapers
and dishes.
When they do have an
'e•ening to spend together, they
are plagued with interruptions
of one sort or another - like
visits from Alex's mother,
Beattie Cooper (Joan Hanna).
and her.,constant companion
George Withers (Stan Lacey);
,ora call from the local health
nurse, Carolyn Bricker (Mary
Giffin) who seizes an oppor-
' tunity to find. the new mother
at home and available for her
checkup.
• Husband Ross is • growing a
little weary of his- role as
mother. Wife Alex likes her
career,• sees it becoming more
and more lucrative and convin-
ces Ross this is The best way.
After all, Ross is only a
struggling writer whose success
depends on„ the whim of
publishers_,_.
Jeanne Beauvais was _ ex-
cellent Was the high -flying Alex
but she failed to outshine Joan
Hanna who turned in a 'glit-
tering performance as her
swinging mother. When Miss
Hanna, -had no lines she con-
-tinued to steal the show with
her flippant manner and
'downright attractive presence.
Tom Alway as Ross made a
believable harassed housewife
and babysitter and Stan Lacey
as George was surprisingly
good in a difficult role.•
Mary Giffin as the 23 -year
old virgin Carolyn (musn't let
that get around) was like a
breath of fresh air. Miss Giffin,
played the part with just the
right amount of innocence and
bubble....and her action in The
Stripper sequence was funny
and flirtatious all at once.
The set designed by Nicholas
Ayre was by far the best yet.
Although the steps leading up
•. to the balcony high above the
stage seemed 'to cause concern
for the actors and actresses
who had to run up and down
them, the effect was- tremen-
dous and gave the audience
several levels at which to watch
and appreciate.
Each of last week's perfor-
mances was prefaced by a din-
ner served in -the barn lobby.
According to Managifg Direc-
tor James Murphy the success
6r -these dinners was tremen-
dolls and more of this sort of
thing can be expected next
season.
Fish this first time as well, the
theatre lobby was licenced and
cocktails and other" beverages
were available between acts. • '
Patrons seemed to appreciate
this innovation and a regular
bar will also likely be one of
next year's main con-
siderations.
In all, the 1973 season has
ended with some triumphs° and
some failtures.... and each will
require a careful study by the
Playhouse Board of Directors
before next season.
• One thing which Will have to
be decided is the type best tc-
cepted , by Huron County
audiences. This year'sseasot
included six comedies, one
musical and one mystery.
Perhaps, another season could
includes little more variety ..»
less comedy, more drama, one
muical for an eight week
season is Probeihly
