Sailors from the Grand Bend
Yacht Club swept the 1973 run-
ning of the annual Dominion
Road Machinery Sailing
Regatta out of Goderich harbor
on Saturday as they took all of
the top three positions. Some'
of that glory was taken away
however by the. fact that only`
four of the 26 boats starting the
24 mile race, finished.

casion may arise when a' ship
will give his intentions to you
by the use of his whistle.
Perhaps the most frequent
one used is the danger signal in
such cases as a small boat
fishing off the dock in which
the kvessel intends to berth.
This situation may become
very dangerous.. since large
vessels' are not -able to change
their .intentions at the last
moment, especially in a strong
current or on a windy day.
•Again the danger signal consist
of five 'or more short blasts' on
the whistle.
Sailboats should also remem-
ber .that they may lose, their
wind if caught between a large
vessel and its berth: -This can
be particularly dangerous. -
Certa'inly occasions arise out
on the lake where _ if both
boaters continue their course
they will collide. In this case
the boat which has the other on
his star_'d side is obliged to
keep clear of the other by
altering course, reducing sped,
.stepping or,Feven going, astern.
Similarly, it . is the ; .other's
obligation to maintain his -
course and speed so as not to
confuse the other vessel.
A good rhyme to remember if
you are obligated to keep clear
is "When a red on your right
doth appear, tis your duty to
alter and keep clear" There are
also whistle signals used
by vessels overtaking and • by
vessels in . fog which will be
dealt with in'another, article. .
Bend sax hours and 38 minutes to complete the race and third place finisher
Tony Webster crossed the tine two hours behind that time. Ed Levens, also of
Grand Bend, placed second and the only other boat to complete the race was
sailed by Goderich skiPPer Don Baxter. (staff photo)
