By remembering some simple
safety rules, the risk of damage
and/or personal injury is
greatly reduced • when sailing.
Always have M.O.T. ap-
proved lifejackets for every per-
son on board and readily
available should the boat -cap-
size. Young persons should 'be
wearing lifejackets at all times.
If a crew member falls over-
board, as many crew members
as possible must watch the per-
son who is overboard, as it is
very easy to lose ' sight, of
someone in the water.
Throw some floating objects
overboard as it, will ,not" only
aid the person in the water, but
also help you to find their
position after turning about. If
you are in the water, do not
panic or try to swim ashore as
the distance is probably a lot
farther than you think. Try to
secure one of the floating ob-
jects and await the return of
the boat.
The best way.- for a large
motor yacht to come about is a
`method known as the William -
son's Turn. To achieve this,
alter course towards the side
that the person fell over until
your course is at about right
angles to your original direc-
tion. Then alter in the other
direction until _ you are 180
degrees from your original
heading. Stop your engine and
-drift towards the person' in Ole
water.
The sail boat will come about
into the wind, immediately
drop his canvas, and drift down
upon the person in the water.
When operating a -sailing
vessel never tie down the sheets'
(lines controlling the sails).
Also rawer use a halt -hitch on
the cleats. Under pressure they
will jam and, in . a strong
breeze, the sheet may have to
be cut tespill the, wind out of
the sails.
When underway nevergo oh
the low deck. without a safety
line and wear the proper gear,
such as canvas 'shoes, to avoid
slipping on the ` wet' deck.
(Besides; the skipper will not
appreciate 'heel marks on his
deck!) '
When turning about always
turn into the wind. Turning
with the "wind causes the boom
to come around heavily and
may knock someone overboard
and it also causes great strain
on the boats gear. Turning with
the wind is known as jibbing.
In a sailing vessel always
operate the ship from the wind-
ward side in order to have a
clear unobstructed view of the
horizon.
Power boats when passing
sailing vessels should reduce
their wake and give. them a
wide berth. -
Before going for a sail tell
someone of your intentions and
approximate time of tfeturning-
home. If you become overdue
he will be in a position to notify
the authorities that you are
missing and a search may be
conducted.
If you think you are the ob-
ject of a search, hoist a large
metal object up the mast as far
as possible as this will show on
radar and the search may be
continued during hours of --
darkness and low visibility.
Remember: A safe boater is a
better boater.
