ROUND ANO ABOUT WITH MARTHA
Monday - a lovely gentle rain
- and we surely needed it.
Goderich has been looking
nice and green despite -the little
rain, but we are very fortunate
being SO close to the lake -
there was always SOME
moisture during the nite.
The fountains about Town
are certainly refreshing - (and
they are not "wasting" a lot. of
water as smile have intimated).
The Municipal Offices - the
lovely old Post Office - has
three nice round fountains and
a lot of beautiful flowers - a
credit to the green' fingered
Parks personnel. In fact the
town can surely brag about the
beautiful flower gardens
belonging tci the Town AND.the
citizens. Everyone has just
done fantastic things with their
gardens, both flower and
vegetable.
The other day•I spotted some
tomatoes that had been tied up
to stakes - and the size of them
were' fantastic - BEAUTIFUL -
mouth watering - I just stood
and stared! No, I won't tell you
where they were - but the young
couple should be very proud of
them.
The other day someone was
talking about the big snowfall
in the ROCKIES! - and they
forecast an early winter and a
heavy one. Br -r -r. After such a
beautiful summer I'm surely
not looking forward 'to winter.
What has anyone done - in the
fine weather - about something
special for the SANTA
PARADE? -
I thought THAT would
shake you!
So we --ran- k►ok--forward--tcr a
couple of frantic weeks with
o a rvone trying to make the
best of the dying summer. Well,
enjoy it, it win never come
again ... never.
Here is a note to a .dear
friend - of thousands - Peter
L rn►merman. -
I)ear P:
We meteiss you very much since
you,,, decided you HAD to have
the suninaer off.
Most of, us didn't.. realize you
hadn't had even a few weeks
-off in the summer since you
first drove your little wiener
wagon to The Square in 1930.
• You know that you have
become a fixture a part of the
scenery - and a very necessary
part Of the ger" things that
happen. in Goderich alt sum-
mer.
...tiomehow - since I was not a
steady customer - I didn't quite
realize how important your
popcorn and goodies had
hecome.
! recall when' Son Doug,
Madeline and family were
overseas for four years, I had
asked in a letter what their
first thoughts of Goderich were
and they replied - "Definitely,
Pete's hot dog§ and popcorn."
- When they 'lived here, their
daughter and the twins were
horn - and many a hurried trip
at the last minute before you
left The Square was made
because Madeline "just had to
have" one of-Pete's hot dogs or
popcorn - or both.
Last week they were in
Goderich for the first time after
four years in the Sunny South -
and 'Pete', was missing.
This° was–a rea-t--heart-brea-k---
Pete, because since they have
travelled about they world,
nowhere did they ever find
anything to compare with your
cooking.
1 may not have written this
letter • at this time, but 1 have
had many calls asking about
you, also 1 felt • along with
many others that you should
not be allowed to retire without
some fan•fare, since people
scattered around the world-
think fondly of your cheery
smile and great hot dogs.
So, dear Peter, everyone will
be looking forward.

The members dlh'the Harbour Beach Patrol this summer are Tom Hoad, Wendy Ryan, Tess
Dourly and Connie Bell. They ate hired by the Goderich Recreation Committee and' under
the control of Recreation Director Mike Dymond. The supervised swimming season at Har-
bour Park began June 26 and will run through until September 3. There must be three patrol
members on duty at all times between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily during the
season.
These people are very well qualified as a bronze medal, and leader patrol course is Ta
necessity in obtaining the job. A St. John Ambulance course is held by most of them also.
Their job mainly consists of water safety enforcement and the maintaining control of the
swimming area at Harbor Beach. One of the major problems the "lifeguards" have is -un-
disciplined children who seem to enjoy abusing town property such as life rings or
megaphones used by the patrol. At times the patrol is abused verbally by some children as
well according to patrol member Tom Hoad.
"Parents seem to look on the patrol as free baby sitters at times," said Hoad as other
patrol members were quick to agree.
Another problem Is that when swimming conditions. are not .favourable, parents tend to
let their children wander out too far and don't fully realize how easy it is for a wave to
sweep,.the child under once he or she has lost balance. Parents should keep a strict control
on youngsters who are not good swimmers and keep them In shallow water.Because of the
alertness of the patrol the Harbor Beach has been free of any casualties thus far this sum-
mer. Only two risky incidents have taken place both handled most efficiently by the patrol.
