Federation wants List*
council to drink effluent
The long ,controversial
Listowel Lagoon is back in the
news and still stirring up
heated verbal exchanges bet-
ween the . community of
Listowel and those who live
downstream on the Maitland
River from the not always per-
fect sewage treatment facility.
The town of Listowel is today
holding an "Open House" at
the lagoon site in an attempt to
rectify a situation that the
municipality feels exists as far
as information about the con-
dition of the facilities is concer-
tned.
In announcing the get
togetherbeside the lagoon,
Listowel town council ex-
plained it was in an attempt to
"give the general public the op-
portunity to view the site first
hand, and observe its
operation."
The "Open House" is being
held between 2:00 p.m. and
8:00 p.m. Goderich Town
Council has instructed as many
councillors as possible to be -on
hand for the event—
Bus..transportation has been
arranged for anyone wishing a
free ride to the event from
Listowel, Brussels and Atwood.
A complete tour has been
laid on for the whole site and
refreshments are to be served
afterwards beside the lagoon.
How many people will turn
out to have a look at the con-
troversial sewage system is still
anyone's guess, but apparently
representatives of the Perth
County Federation of
,Agriculture will not be on
hand.
They informed Listowel
,Mayor David- Kil erg and
members of Town Council that
they would not attend unless
the town fathers were willing to
drink water coming from the
discharge pipe.
Douglas Crawford, Goderich,

sage.
Prior to her marriage, the
bride was honored at showers
given by Mrs. Charles Orr, Miss

Th'e Federation also charged
that many statements reported
by the Listowel Banner "are
not factual and we would like
to inform the public "of what the
real facts are."

allowed their sewage to enter
the Chapman Drain and the
Maitland River and pollute the
streams and the air for miles
down stream, killin fish and
wildlife ever since 1960," the
Federation statement said.
The Federation claims that it
was not until the Perth County
Federation of Agriculture and
the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture, with help from
other citizen groups (the Save
the Maitland Association) put'
pressure on the Ontarip Water
Resources 'Commission to start
a spray irrigation system which
is still being carried on in the
summer to relieve the situation,
that anything was done
"They • also say," the
Federation press release notes,
"that they have made extensive
improvements in the past. Only
one improvement has been
made and that was two years
ago. This was a one -acre
addition of an aeration cell
which was also built after ,
pressure by the Perth and On;
tario Fedgration of
Agriculture.
"We are somewhat surprised
to hear of' the open house at the
lagoon so the public can view
the lagoon when it is at its best
conclition....when the Campbell
Soup factory is on holidays, as
well as many -town factories
and the residents, and the
spraying is being continued. We
would appreciate it,if the town
would conduct an open house
in winter or early spring when
the odor is at its worst rather

than the best," the Federation
said.
The Federation also
disagreed with the town's con-
tention ,that the public is poorly
informed about the lagoon
facilihtieea.
T
public driving by have
smelled the foul air for miles in
evaly direction and have
vieWed the polluted stream for
miles downstream, and have
read many factual press
releases for the last several
years," said the Federation.
"We also feel if the town was
concerned about keeping the
streams and lakes clean and fit
for residents, both urban and
rural, they would not be
avoiding their responsibility as
they are when they object to
