HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1973-08-16, Page 4'AGE 4-•-GODIRICH §ICNAL-STAR, THURSDAY, AUGUST 16, 1973 44,0 4 4 Today's boater is provided with several sources of weather broadcasts such as television and radio, If you are fortunate enough to have an AM or FM radio set MAYFOR weather .broadcasts are available from the marine stations such as ,VBE Sarnia and VBC Wiarton. However, even with such ser- vices available you may find yourself caught in a sudden squal with gale force winds and a thick blanket of fog. This situation may be avoided by carefully watching the developing weather. Weather lore has developed from those concerned with the weather in their everyday lives such as sailors, farmers and Minters. A useful one is 'When the rain's before the w\nd; Topsail halliards you must mind. When the winds before the rain; hoist your topsails up again." This saying fells usthat, if there is a light breeze when the rain begins, it will likely blow to gale force later on. However, if the wind preceeds the rain, the worst will be over by the time the rain 'begins. Some other are: "When the clouds appear like rocks and towers; The earth's refreshed- by frequent showers."• "Mackerel skies and mares' tails make lofty ships carry low, sails. "If clouds,, look as if scratched by a hen; get ready 'to reef your topsails then" "A dog in the morning,. sailor take warning; A dog in the night, is the sailor's delight.'. (Sun dog is a name commonly used for the rain- bow) As well as observing the weather around you, the most useful instrument in weather forecasting is the barometer. The two types of barometers are the mercurial and the aneroid. The most practical is the .aneroid since it does not require the same standard of -delicate care. The aneroid barometer con- sists of a metal box partially vacuated of air and her- metically sealed. The at- mospheric pressure acting upon the box alters its •volume. By suitable arrangement of springs and levers this box movement is shown greatly magnified on a"••„ scale graduated in inches and millibars. The aneroid is set by comparison with a mercury barometer, an adjustment screw being provided at' the back. The only corrections necessary are index error and height. Another saying aids .one in reading the glass. "Long foreto!d, long last; short notice, soon past." If the rise or fall is rapid, the change is likely to be short- lived since you are likely near the path of a low. If pressure falls slowly, but steadily, you, are likely passing away from a high into an area of lows. With practice you will be quite sur- prised how accurately you can foretell the weather by your own observations. By the way! Watch the new moon. If you can hang a powder -horn on the lower 'rim of the crest, it is__a sign of stormy weather. Any boating questions will be answered through inquiries directed to this- paper. • .Industrial "league set for play-offs The Goderich Industrial League's playoffs beg'n with two games this everting, 'Thur- sday, tltrgust 16 n the A division.
