Brock Street ready for. paviirg
Two reports of corporation
officers were he,ard at the
regular meeting of Goderich
-
Town Council last Thursday.
Those were reports frotrii Town
Foreman Stan Meriam and
Marina Supervisor J. Alex
Wilkins.
In his report Mr. Meriam
noted that Brock Street, from
Cambria Road to Albert Street
and from Victoria Street to
Cambria Road, was ready for
paving.
On the first section it took
two weeks to excavate and put.
"B" gravel acrid "A" gravel
back to rade as well as to
lower four catch basins and one
man hole to grade.
On the second section 400
feet of storm sewer and six
catch basins were installed,,,
Meriam_ Alan reported
that during the previous month
two tractor mowers spent two
days at the airport cutting
grass and two then trimmed the
grass around buildings. This
work was in preparation for the
airshow held there July 1.
•
The Town Foreman also told
council in his i port that
during August the municipal
crews hoped to excavate St,.
Vincent Street for one block
and put gravel back to grade.
"We also plan on doing
Warren Street from Britannia
Road to Bennett Street in
August," Mr. Meriam noted.
In Parks Department ac-
tivities Mr. Meriam reported
that all parks are cut once each*
week and flowers kept watered.-
"The band stand at Harbor
Park was repaired in time for
the first concert,. his_ report
noted, and the grandstand
and bleachers at Agriclture
Park were repaired in time for
the first race of the year."
Mr. Meriam also told council
that he had the bulldozer back
to level stone that keeps
washing ---- up on St.
Christopher's Beach. The
machine also pushed out the
open storm drain at the same
time.
:'We will have to do this
again in July or August depen-
ding on the buildup ,of stone,"
Dymond — co-operatioh
great for Summerfest
In his written report to
Goderich .Town Council,
Recreation Director Mike
Dymond noted that all plans
for Summerfest '73 activities
were in readiness.
"Excellent co-operation from
all the groups involved has
been received, and, no serious
problems have been en-
countered," Mr. Dymond said.
The =Recreation Director also
reported that playgrounds are
now -in their second week.
About the only concern was
over the attendance at the
beach location, which has now
been changed to Harbor Park.
"Attendance there has picked
up a bit," he pointed out,,
"Generally 'speaking," Mr.
Dymond said, "the playground
operation" has been very 'sue- .
cessful to. date."
The report also note that
the pool is operating very well.
"No signs of water leaks have
been seen, the heating system is
working well and water con-
ditions have been• excellent,"
he reported.
Attendance is good for both
lessons and public' swimming.
"The Provincial sailing
program was very successful,"
Mr. Dymonds report said.
"Comments on the part of most
of the participants were that
they learned considerable
amounts of theory and also had
an opportunity to apply it prac-
tically."
"The two staff people- said
Goderich was the best place
they had worked at yet, and
produced the best response,"
he said..
Mr. Dymond also noted that
the Rgcre/Action project is
touching on a lot of areas that
.Z,hopfully,will be expanded'upon'
in the fall:
"They are getting a good
response and reaction from the
public to their requests and ad-
vertisements," he concluded.
the report pointed out.
IR his report Marina Super-
visor\ J. Alex Wilkings noted,
"Traffic into port, to date,
number approximately 80
boats. This is roughly only 50
percent of last year's total to
the same date. The reason for
this appears to be high water
levels in the Lake Erie region,
plus a fear on the part of the
yachting public as to a possible
gasoline shortage in Canada."
Mr. Wilkins also reported
that repairs to the docks have
been completed for this season
and "appear to be. meeting the
needs of the public".
New pump -out equipment
has been purchased, Mr.
Wilkins reported, and appears
to be entirely satisfactory.
SPORTS2ACTION SINE
by. MQRI,EY LEkKIN.Q.' JFi.
Hammerin' Hank Aaron continues his quest for that magic 715
home run to break Babe4Ruth's all-time record.
The young fella` that captured his 700 round tripper in the
stands was rewarded with 700 silver dollars by. the Braves tearn.
The lucky one to corral the 714th gets a thousand bucks and the
guy who grabs thetie breaker gets two grand - anybody want to
take a trip to Atlanta,(with yourball glove)?
Kendall Oil still tops the Industrial League, with a slim two
point, advantage over Sandy's Clippers. There is still a mad scram-
ble for that final playoff spot with Brindley's, Sifto and Carlow
slugging it out.
The local soccer activity has been what organizers term "more
than we had ever hoped for". All the Goderich entries in out-of-
town play are doing extremely well and the House Leagues are
just as exciting.
...Coaching the seniors this year are Sandy and Stan Profit, those
two distinguish cot mentors, who have done a fine job with their
ball team.
The CFL is. almost ready to open the 1973 season and the
Hamilton Ti -Cats (my favourites by the way. "Writer's
note: Who says I"can't have a favourite), are the, best bet to repeat
as .Gey Cup champions. I pick the standings to go as' follows.
East, Hamilton, Montreal, '"Toronto, Ottawa.
West. Calgary, British .Columbia, Edmonton, Saskatchewan,
Winnipeg.
Getting back to baseball, did you ever listen to a ball game on a
station that wasn't your favourite team's broadcasting network?
I have listened to the St. Louis, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh,
Philadelphia and Chicago networks when the Expos were playing
and believe me, I have never heard announcers so prejudiced and
biased in my life., I have similarly listened to the Montteal an-
nouncers. Dave Van Horne, Duke Snider and Russ Taylor - and
they, while they are slightly: in favour of the Expos come nowhere
near the flagrant favouritism shown by such personalities as Jack
Buck, Hal Kingg,,and Bob Prince.
It's always- "tell, we need a run here" or "We clobbered „the
Expos tonight and we're gonna clobber 'em again tomorrow." I
may be a little picky but it really annoys me.ow about you?
Short -shorts; Tigers have to be a little miffed' at Hiller and
Codman being left off the All-Star line-ups.
