Local hospita
still accredited
The Alexandra Marine &
General hospital in Goderich
was visited on May 30 by Dr.
J.O. Medhqrst, Medical Direc-
tor of Toronto East General
Hospital. Dr. ' Medhurst
represented the Canadian
Council on Hospital Ac-
creditation.
Mr.'K.G. Munn, Board Chair-
man and the Administrator,
Mr. E.A. Elliott of the
Goderich Hospital have
received a letter fr9tn," Dr. L.Q.
Bradley, Executive Director of
the Canadian Council advising
them that the hospital has
again been awarded Ac-
creditation status. _This status
will be reviewed again within
three years. •
The council also stated that
the staff of the hospital and the
Doctors have performed their
duties in a most conscientious
and meritorious manner. This
has resulted in a high quality of
patient care and is commended.
The council had suggestions
for future consideration of the
;board and they too will be
carried out. .The board, Doctors
and hospital staff are really
proud of their achievements.

Pendulum Players
won't get jailyard
Despite a last minute request
from Pendulum Players, a
young people's theatrical group
of Goderich, asking County
Council to reconsider its denial
of facilities at the former
Huron County Jail to the
group, council upheld a recom-
mendation from Property Com-
mittee on Friday refusing use of
the premises.
In a brief filed with the coun-
cil by Pendulum Players it was
explained that the ,group is an
organization formed of local
high school and university
students, "united in a single
aim of presenting gratis theatre
to the residents of and visitors
„,o Goderich."
Last year the group was
-.g-ranted use of the former jail
facilities.
"The jail provides all the
necessary ingredients for the
group to be a success," the brief
said. "It provides a home for
-the group; -a-unique-setting- to-----u-se the front entrance -too many
help attract visitors and the changes would have to be made
in the jail and this would be
"too expensive for the county".
Lobb said he realized that
Pendulum Players was
probably a "good thing for the
county but I see no way for this
year.
Pendulum Players explained
they would propose performan-
ces on Tuesdays and Saturdays
with practice sessions,taking up
another three nights of the
week.
The only alternative now
open to Pendulutn Players
would be to make use of the
Goderich bandshell 'in H rbor
Park but they explain this'
presents many difficulties and
might 'not be feasible.
At Harbor Park there are no
facilities for storing props and
costumes and ,,moving all the
equipment each . day would
make the project nearly im-
possible.
In other jail news the
property committee explained
that the matter of the future of
the former County jail was still
under investigation in..conjunc-
tion with the Goderich Town
Council, and the Huron County
Branch , of the Architectural'
Conservancy of Ontario (for-
merly Save ,the Jail Society).
best• acoustics of any place&in
Goderich."
"We realize," the brief went
on, "that the main objection tc
use of the jail is the question of
safety around the construction
of the assessment office exten-
tion. There is an alternative
way of entering the court yard
other than the main yard gate;
that is, by way of .the _front en-
trance."
"The executive of Pendulum
Players are willing to pay out
of their own pockets, if
necessary, two people to super-
vise the area of construction at
any time the public is present."
Pro rt Committee Chair-
man -HHaro)d Lobb said,
however, that his committee
recommended to Council that
the earlier decision be stuck
with.
"This still might conflict with
the building program," he said.
He said if the public were to

be going door to door through
Goclerich'over the next week in
an effort to raise more than
3500 names in support of the
Committee's objectives.
Those objectives were
outlined last week in a Signal=
Star advertisement: "To see
establishment of a shopping
mall as outlined in petition of
Suncoast Estates to town coon:
cil; to obtain for the citizens of
Goderich more competitive
pricing for goods and com-
modities, to establish a more
attractive business appearance
and services for the citizens of
Goderich, to create em-
ployment by retaining all, or
most, of the purchasing power
of the citizens of Goderich in
their own community, to
establish new w sources of
taxation on behalf •of the
citizens of Goderich and to
boost the economy of the Town
of Goderich by inducing neigh-
bouring communities to shop in
Goderich." ,
Tuesday evenings meeting
was conducted by self appoin-
ted chairman, of the citizens'
group, - Rick Robertson. Mr.
Robertson told the meeting
that his committee had no axe
to grind for or against either
the Businessmen's Association
or Suncoast Estates but only
wanted to voice the opinions of
ordinary Goderich citizens.
"If local businessmen can't
compete with new businesses,"
he told the meeting, "then 'let
them fold."
During open discussion those
in attendance levelled
numerous charges against=.local
Wbusiitessmen and their prac-
tices. One gentlemen told the
meeting he would rather walk
to London to shop than do
business with some local firms.
He did concede though that
in participatory democracy.
"We must tell our elected of-
ficials what we want," he
stressed.
"Town Council has only
heard from two groups, we
want them to hear from the'
third," Robertson said.
During discussion from the
floor =the biggest complaints
voiced were high prices and a
lack of selection. Many said
they did not want to travel to
London to shop but were forced
to by the situation that exists in
Goderich.

Baby drowns; police

Police Chief Pat King told
the Signal Star in an interview
on Tuesday morning that the
Goderich Municipal Police
Department will call a meeting
in the near future in an effort
to better organize a volunteer
marine rescue unitof local
boaters.
"Neither the Police Depart-
ment or the Goderich Volun-
teer Fire Department ar equip-
ped with a boat," the chief
pointed out.
The meeting comes in the

Police Chief King has also
issued an appeal to any

in emergency. Any person
willing to provide this com-
munity service is asked to con-

In other activities this week
police investigated 123 oc-
currences and laid 12 charges
under the Crimminal Code, 23
under the Highway Traffic Act
and seven under the Liquor
Control Act.
Police Chief King also points
out this week that officers of
the police force are enforcing
the curfew section of the Child
Welfare Act which clearly
states children, under the age
of 16, may not loiter in' public
places after 10:00 p.m._
Chief King points out that
this does not effect young
people going to or from some
event but only those loitering,
or driving around in cars, with
no apparent purpose.
our weekends shopping," one
unhappy 'ghiper said.
Only two questions seemed to
stump Mr.' Robertson. When
asked what stores would be
located in the mall he admitted
only knowing of the new A and
P grocery outlet and an uniden-
tified department store. He said
that Suncoast. Estates' would
not reveal the firms involved.
When asked if he could be
sure that Goderich was capable
of supporting a quality mall or
if the new mall would wind up
like many others with several
empty stores, he only stated
that his personal opinion was
that it could.
Mr. Robertson also told the
meeting that the "Build the
Mall Committee" had retained
a lawyer.
Membership in the
organization went on . Sale
Tuesday evening as well at
$1.00 per person.
Robertson hopes the money
raised in ,this way will help off-
set costs he has incurred to
it date and will continue to incur
during the battle for the new
mall. Until Tuesday evening's
meeting he had been paying
costs out of his own pocket.
