was nowhere to be seen. One
can only surmise that jt. had by
this time either died of old age,
or grown tired of the repetitive
scene and had gone to seek ad-
venture elsewhere.
"Female complaints" were
the sole concern of Lydia E.
Pinkham's Vegetable Com-
pound. The preparation was
15`1 alcohol (for medicinal
purposes only, of course!) and
purported to relieve backache,
revive the appetite, and
regulate the menstrual period.
Lydia Pinkham relied on
testimonials to substantiate the
claims of the product, and
guaranteed payment of $15,000
if the original letter containing
the testimonial could not be.
produced. That would prove
nothing, of course, except the
fact that the letter had been
written by someone. Anyone
could have composed them.
In one advertisement, Mrs. S.
Bremer (who, the item riather
superfluously informs us was
the Secretary of the Ladies
Relief Corps),. reported that she
had endured two years of
terrible pain in her spinal cord,
with no relief from medicine or
plasters. Then she began to
take the Vegetable Compound,
and through a "regular
housekeeping" of the system
was cured by five bottles of it.
Five bottles of" the mixture
would certainly have some ef-
fect!
An even more miraculous
cure was that of. Mrs. Ira
Hollinger of Stilvideo, Ohio.
She had an abscess in the side
of one of her fallopian tubes
anf the doctor advised her that
her only help would be "to go
to the hospital and be operated
on". Before taking that fateful
step, she tried the medicine. It
cured her completely and made
her "a stout, healthy woman".
What more can a woman ask?
Every sick female who could
not understand her ailment
was urged. to write to Mrs.
Pilikham for "free and helpful
advice". It, must have comfor-
ted women to no end to know
that they had a friend in Lydia
Pinkham.

Richards and Co., was hailed
as the remedy for some
rather diverse complaints, in-
cluding bronchitis, distemper,
diptheria, colds and a severely
sprained leg! The most
astonishing receovery was that
of a small boy who had had a
nail in his knee. Amputation
was advised, but the liniment
cured the leg in three days!
The advertisements which 1
have mentioned are only a
sampling. The 1903 SIGNAL
contained many other
promotions for patent
medicines, which were..
gradually similar in tone and
style to those included in this
essay.
When one reads the old ad-
vertisements, and immediately
notes that arrogance,
ignorance, and dishonesty con-
tained in them, one's rather
shocked to think that people
once believed them. Yet the
public today is no different
from the public in 1903.
Modern Man is still taken in by
not only patent medicines,
promotions, but also adver-
tisements concerning detergent,
automobiles, deodorant, food
and every other aspect of life.
The old-style patent
,medicine advertisement may be
dead, but as long ees man is
willing to dupe and be duped,
its spirit will live on.
