Education Ministry closes
several teachers colleges
Education. !Minister Thomas
Wells last week announced the
closing of teachers' colleges in
Peterborough and Stratford
and steps to be taken towards
the amalgamation of three
other colleges with universities,
Both Peterbortjugh and
Stratford Teachers' Colleges

Mr. Wells said that Trent
,and Queen's Universities have
initiated discussions with a
view to developing a co-
operative program of, teacher
education whereby students in
the Peterborough area could
take the major part of a four-
year training progratn at Trent.
Declining school enrolments
are reflecting in the demand for
teachers and have indicated to
the Ministry that the number of
teacher -training facilities could
be reduced.
In 1969 about 7,000 new
elementary teacher graduates
were needed in Ontario. In
1971, the requirement dropped
to 3,600 At the secondary level
3,400 new teacher graduates
were required in 1969 The
requirement dropped to 2,500
in 1971.
Decisions with respect
teachers' colleges in -Toronto,
Hamilton and Ottawa will he
made at a later date.
Mr. Wells said that the move
will result in stronger faculties
of education which will better
serve prospective teachers and

Rev. Leonard Warr conduc-
ted the funeral service Sunday
for the late Stanley - Lloyd
Crawford who died May :31 at
the Alexandra Marine igrid
General Hospital iii Goderich
following a lengthy illness. He
had been a resident of 99 Brock
Street in Goderich.
He was born March 25, 1900,
at Milverton, to Thomas
Crawford and the former Sarah
Thompson, He lived in the
Milverton area tin'119 his
marriage to Sarah A. Lapp,
who survives, at Oxbow,
Saskatchewan, in April of 1927.
Mr. Crawford was employed
at •Goderich Manufacturing a,
truck naechani•J• after he
moved toGoderich from Strat-
ford in 1934. He was a member
of Victoria Street United
Church.
