Co -Pilot
(contintaed from page 3A)
about the drug situation in the
area and also about the general
appearance and effects of most
drugs found locally.
St. George's Anglican Church
was the scene of an experimen-
tal batik workshop on Saturday
February 24. Arty and crafts
could have been ideal programs
to carry on but we' had no
finance and no suitable
location.
Every second "Tuesday night
in the parlour at Knot
Presbyterian Church, Co -Pilot
sponsored Human Relations
Seminars.
These seminars featured a
guest speaker discussing a par-
ticular topic with an interested
audience.
Among the subjects presen-
ted were Drugs and the Law
and featured Corporal Maurice
Woods from the London
detachment of the H.C. M.P. as
the guest speaker - Venereal
disease, with Dr. Frank Mills
as the speaker; Broken Homes
with Bruce Heath of the
Children's Aid Society. Abor-
tion with Dr. H R. Ceisier, Civil
Rights with Dan Murphy, and
Sexuality and C orimm'unication
with Dr. Mario Cauchi and Ms.
Lorrailie Cauchi.
These seminars brought out
a few interested people but not
as many as we hoped for. The
presentation which were geared
towards young people were
much more successful than the
adult seminars.
Music and still photography
workshops were initiated by
Co -Pilot.
The center at 38 Hamilton
Street provided . young people
with a place to go on Friday
and Saturday nights.
The' public relations commit-
tee were also invited as guest
speakers by a few service clubs
in order to make 'the project
better known. This proved suc-
cessful and we are especially
thankful to the Rotary for their
help.
The Signal Star also gave us
space to write a weekly column
explaining all programs ac-
tivities to the community.
Co -Pilot provided coun-
selling and referral services to
interested clients.
Thanks to Rev. Garwood
Russell .from t. George's
Anglican Church we were
allowed to use the church to
present films and discussions
on several weekends. -
We obtained the old Eaton
building on the square for the
winter break, from March 16 to
25, to be used as a. coffeehouse.
The building held .a few card
tables, a ping pong table andd-a
stereo set and we entertained
on the average'.of about 60
young people every night*" for
the whole week.
We set up a job bank for
local young people. Anyone
who needed young people to do
odd jobs -or errands -would-con-
tact us and we .Would promptly
find the required manpower.
This program was very suc-
cessful. and we found a lot of
small jobs for kids- to do and
never received any complaints
•••
from employers.
A petition seeking support for
a permanent youth -adult
organization and center was
circulated .and we collected
over 400 signatures from in-
terested citizens.
We obtained a larger cof-
feehouse at 33 Anglesea Street
in mid-April. We had hoped
that this new coffeehouse
would become the main activity
of our project but the fact that
spring was here and, that kids
coufd niw get involved in out-
door activities soon proved us
wrong.
We questioned a lot of young
people as to why they were not
patronizing the coffeehouse and
we learned that; The cof-
feehouse is too far from the
square, The coffeehouse was
needed in cold winter months
and not during the summer,
There -were still no activities
happening at the coffeehouse
due to the lack of materials.
We then conducted a need -
appreciation survey in the local
schools to gauge the interests
and needs of young people for
the summer progiam.
This survey proved that the
coffeehouse idea was quickly
fading and that young people
wanted a center that would of-
fer thein a variety of activities
rather -than just a place to go to
listen to music. Recreation ac-
tivities were what young people
in Goderich ivanted.
This is why we have decided
that Project Co -Pilot will end
on May :31, 1973 and that a
new recreation program will be
initiated.
'-his program titled
Rec•re,Action will begin on
June. II, and will go on until
September I. It is sponsored by
the provincial government and
the recreation committee ' in
Goderich.
Mike Dymond, Local
Recreation Director, -will be
working with three local young
people to ensure the projects
success. -
The experience which we
received while, working ,with
Co -Pilot will benefit us forever.
We got to know a lot of people
in the community and found
out that the -establishment"
was not as uncaring as we had
believed. •
Co -Pilot was. very successful.
It was only a stepping stone in
Goderich. Hopefully many
more projects -of this nature
Will be initiated' in order to
provide young people with a
place to go, something to do
and to learn a bit along the
way -
