ed a phonecall from
Manpower, in
, informing uw that
o•Pilot had been an-
y the Federal Govern-
"'
rnent and was due to start on
Monday December 11, 1972.
We later received the terns
of reference and defined objec-
tives of project Co -Pilot as
agreed to by the sponsors.
These were as follows:
The project will provide eight
jobs at a federal cost of
21,391.00.
A drop-in• center for youth
will be provided to give infor-
mation to young people about
drugs, alcohol, and other
problems they may encounter
with provision for referral to
appropriate agencies for those
who need special help.
Co -Pilot will organize
programs and activities for the
young out-patients of the
Goderich Psychiatric Hospital.
Co -Pilot will arrange adult
seminars and discussion groups
for local parents of the com-
munity who are concerned with
the problems of youth.
Co -Pilot, in conjunction with
local agencies, will attempt to
set up a permanent youth
organization for Goderich.
Co -Pilot workers will be sub-
ject to the,,direct guidance of
the advisory group.
• With these guidelines ., in
mind we promptly opened our
office at 38 Hamilton Street
and began to put our plans into
action.
The staff members were split
up into four major committees,
these being:
Property committee; in
charge of the center as such
and the - . sponsibil'ty for th- c•
proper cleaning- and main-
tenance and physical aspects of
the- project.
Recreation con►Mitt ee,
working with Mike Dymond,
Local Recreation Director, way
in charge of all recreational ac-
tivities participated in by. Co -
Pilot.
Information; coHIM ittee
responsible for providing films,
pamphlets, speakers and
general information for ac-
tivities as well as Public
Relations and the weekly
column in the Signal .Star. -
`Services committee: concer-
ned with provision of ."coun-
selling" referrals, and an-
swering crisis telephone ser-
vices. Also included the GPH
committee in charge of all out-
patient activities of the
Goderich 'Psychiatric and the
Human Relations seminars
which took place 'at Knox
Church eveYy second Tuesday.
At first many people Were
very enthusiatic about project
Co -Pilot and were very eager to
join the advisory board to help
us out. As soon as Co -Pilot
became a routine job, however,
we began to lose our hoard
members rather quickly.
The fact thar we were also
plagued by rumours in the.
beginning might also have had
something to do with it. We are
however very grateful to Dr.
Frank Mills, James . McCaul,
Dr. Harry Hudson and Chief
Pat King for their help in
guiding us throughout the
project.
The first four months proved
to be quite busy as we were in
the process of promoting new•
ideas and activities. After these
activities were set up the last
two months were much slower
since (Jur jobs consisted mostly
of supervising existing
programs
Herethen is a list of all our
major activities over the six
month period and a small
analysis of their success or
failure -
Thanks to Rev. Robert
Rayrnont and to the Property
Committee of North Street
United Church we were given
the use of the church g tn-
nasium every Monday and
Wednesday` nights from 9:00
p m. to 11:00 p.m. and -every
Saturday afternoon from 1:00
p m. to 4:00 p.m.
For the first- four months
these free activity periods a;t.-
tracted an !' of about 25
ming people on
weeknights and an average of
30 to 4Q people on Saturday af-
terrttlons.
'Phis program was very suc-
cessful but gradually dispersed
due to the fact that our only
equipment consisted of one
volleyball and one basketball.
People soon tired of the sarne
games and g adually stopped
attending the activities.
The early . firing weather was
not pleasan enough to start
any outdoor ctivities and even
if it had beer equipment would
have still been a major
,problem.
The recreate al activities at
North Street Church would at-
tract people trorn the ages of 12
to ever) 25 or :30 years of age.
'1 his made the competition for
the 'younger kids a bit too
rough, ,o, thanks to Rev. L.
I(oval from Knox Pre(,byterian
Church, we obtained the use of
the Knox Church gymnasium
foi to activit periods. for kids
betwet n the ages of nine to 14.
'I he -,e free activity periods
444 curred from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00
p rn ever, Saturday afternoon.
They were quite successful at
fiat -bit gradually tapered off
due to the lack of adequate
materials
Under the supervision of Dr.
Harry Hudson, ,from the.
Gotten; h P,vchiatric Hospital,
we were allowed to involve
mni.; ,,u t,,pirt lents from the
ho>prr;,1 10 our activities.
This permitted them to talk
to people on their own level
without any legal or medical
involvements
When Dr. Hudson left the
hospital to go into private prac-
tise this severed our liaison
with the out-patients somewhat
but eventually.,rthev were all
released from the hospital
which terminated our duties
there.
This program was also very
successful in as much that it;
gave the young out-patients a
chance to he with their own
peer group.
On Saturday, ;j•'ehruary "1
the Goderich Psvchiatri,
Hospital was the scene of an all
day seminar on the question o1
drug abuse in the area
The seminar was tltle,f
"Goderich Community
Workshop' and was sponsored
by the Goderich and District
Labour Council, the Canada
Labour Council and Co -Pilot.
O er 150 people attended
and project Co -Pilot was
deemed as a very worthy en-
deavor by young people to
promote activities and
programs ,for all interested
, 11 zer►s The day lore seminar
was very success ul, it also
cleared up a lot of misconcep-
tions about Co -Pilot, but like
most endeavors of this type
there was never anything done
to follow it up.
Many people congratulated
us for a job well done and
promised to drop into our office
to see us at work but never
showed up. The seminar did
however educate many adults

Richard
Richard Sniderman has himself a good
little business in Hamilton.
A dollar car wash on downtown Main Street West.
Richard and his father talked about a car wash
:for a long time. They studied location, investigated t luiprnent.
And then about 3 years ago, betook the leap.
But to make any money at just a dollar a car you have to
wash a lot of cars. And sou have to keep -a sharp eye on expenses.
So Richard Sniderman has natural gas for hot water.
And for the overhead heaters too.
Because he knows natural gas is economical, dependable
and the hot water won't run out.
The Snidermans have natural gas at home too.
For heat. For rucking. And because his kids think
it's great for making popcorn.
Naniral Gas...it makes good dollars and sense.
