Project Recreation has
received a provincially spon-
sored Youth in Action Grant
totaling $4,500. The project
will last from June 11 to the
end of August. Co-sponsors are
the Recreation Committee who
contributed $200.
We have divided the bulk of .
the progr`m into five main
themes, these being Activity,
Information. Acc'omn:odations,
Structure and Continuity.
This theme will include all
working projects which the four
staff members will be carrying
out through the summer. No,
specific time or order have been
set but these projects will be
carried out as the need and in-
terest arise.
July 27, 28, 29 and August
27, 28, 29 we will take a group
of young people to Toronto to.
visit the Toronto Ethibition,
Ontario Place, Science Center,
City Hall etc.
The group wi:l be responsible
for guiding the young par-
ticipants as well as finding an
economical place to stay and
making the trip as educational
and valuable as possible.
This project should be aimed
at those young people who or-
dinarily could not afford such a
venture. The young par-
ticipants will have to help
finance the trip through car
washes, bottle drives, odd jobs
and donations.
The trip in itself should not
prove too expensive as the
program c-o-ordinat or will have
-
a 1969 Chevrolet van -at his
disposal for the summer.
The vehicle will be properly
insured and the co-ordinator is
a licensed chauffeur.
All precautions will be taken
and safety will be the most im-
portant factor. The group fully
realizes–the -responsibility this
will involve. The participants
should be at least 14 years of
age and over and will have to
show written consent from
their parents or guardians.
The project will also, be fully
explained and discussed with
parents or. guardians. We will
be able to accommodate as
many as 12 young people at one
time.
Two staff members will each
choose one day per week in
which they will give free guitar
lessons to all interested.
Two staff members will take
about six boys and six girls for
approximately six days and in-
struct them on proper camping
methods eg. set up tents, fires,
reading compass..
Guest speakers will drop in
to give lessons on various cam-
ping and survival techniques.
These. will feature people from
Boy Scouts, St. John Am-
bulance, swimming instructor,
Lands & Forests, hunter, fisher-
man.
The first three -days will be
the instruction period and then
the group will camp out for two
nights at a provincial park
within a 70 mile radius of
'Goderich.
Young particip,$nts must
have written consent from their
parents or guardian, and staff
will stress parent participation.
The project will be fully
discussed and explained to
parents or guardian.
This again will entail a great
responsibility and will be
carefully organized with staff
member, participants and
parents. —
The following week will be a
repeat of activity with a dif-
ferent group of participants.
Accurate written -resumes of
projects will be a must.
In order to promote goodwill
and get the community to ac-
cept the project, staff . wilt
organize young people to per-
form small courtesies to
patients in hospitals, nursing
homes and the Goderich
Psychiatric Hospital camp in
Bayfield.
The Staff will. bring young
people to camp where they will
participate in games and ac-
tivities with patients. This is a
service which is a necessity in
Ontario Hospitals.
Various topical and enter-
taining films will be shown
regularly during the program.
Modern Talking Pic-
ture).
Speakers will drop in to give
small talks on relevant topics.
These speakers -will include
doctor, lawyer, policeman,
photographer, and other such
people.
The project will attempt to
improve the relationship with
the comrnun,ity and police.
The project will organize
young people to form teams
and play baseball, soccer, foot-
ball, volleyball, tennis, etc. We
will stress unorganized sports
where teams will be formed
upon rival. This will allow
everyo'ie a chance to play.
The projectwill attempt to
recruit volunteer students to
conduct physical education
classes.
Small arts and crafts
workshops will be set up to in-
volve young girls.
The project will attempt to
organize' young people to spend
one day per week cleaning up
beaches; park, the square. This
will be a small pollution probe
campaign showing community
importance of littering only
proper areas (garbage cans).
The proJect will also set yp a
job bank facility where people
needing young people to per-
form odd jobs around the house
or babysitting, cleaning up
yards, etc. will phone in. This
will allow young people to
make a few" dollars of well
needed spending money.
The project• will attempt to
set up one outdoor concert in-
volving as much local talent as
possible.
Recreation will acquire the
help of a good mechanic to in-
struct young boys and girls
about basic mechanical func-
tions of engines.
Many young people have not
even learned to change a flat
tire yet. From this the group
project will attempt to build a
go-kart for example from old
Custom Farm Work
lawn mower and junk parts.
Young people will learn how
to use a 16 rn.m. projector
properly.
The project will attempt to
conduct tours of various plants
and factories to demonstrate to
young -.people how these
Operate. These tours will in-
clude Ford Plant in St.
Thomas, Coke Plant in Strat-
ford, Signal -Star Publishing in
Goderich, Salt Mine in
Goderich, Dominion Road:4 in
G6derich.
The. project will contact local
antique car club and let old car
, buffs explain all about -various
antique cars they have,
Day excursions on nature
trails in local provincial parks
and scenic areas for young
people will be organized.
A Big Brother type of service
will be set up with local
Children's Aid Society.
On the former Air Force
Base in Clinton a . recreation
center is being set up since it
has so many facilities such as
'swimming pool, tennis courts,
bowling alley, arena etc.
The project will help to tran-
sport as many young people as
possible from Goderich to this
center who are interested in
using the facilities.
Since the project co-ordinator
will have a van at his disposal
and also is a licensed chauf-
feur, transportation for young
people could easily be
arranged. It is approximately
12 miles from Gode>•ich,, to the
former Air Base:. - .
The project could find in-
terested young people, tran-
sport them to 'the center early
in the afternoon and pick them
up later on in the afternoon.
An information theme will
include all, public relations
with various service clubs,
newspaper, community. It will
also include a small 'infor-
mation project.
The project will provide in-
formation on V.D., birth con-
trol, Birthright, abortion,
alcohol, drugs, etc. This infor-
mation will be available in the
form of pamphlets from Addic-
tion Research Foundation and
the Huron County Health Unit.
The project will also provide
referral services for those
alienated from recognized
agencies.
For this project we will enlist
the help of a doctor, lawyer,
policeman, medical officer of
health and a teacher.
The community will be kept
up to date with all project ac-
tivities through flyers,
newspapers, posters. The co-
ordinator has obtained a
weekly column in this
newspaper.
The co-ordinator will also set
up a meeting with group and
local service clubs and
organizations to let them know
about project.
The accommodations theme
will include all attempts to
procure facilities for summer.
The project will attempt to
obtain a local public or elemen-
tary school . gym to be used as
headquarters. We will
hopefully also gain use of stage
as well as gym equipment. The
gym will be used as a
recreation center, games area,
arts and crafts corner,
discussion area and small cof-
feehouse area.
The School will also include
a baseball diamond as well as
soccer and football fields.
The project. will attempt in
conjunction with the recreation
director, to `stress to the com-
munity the importance of
making schools and facilities
available to people after hours
and on holidays.
This could be a major effort
•in helping to keep -young people
off the streets.
Mothers are encouraged to
send their children to
headquarters as it will be well.
supervised at all times. This
could allow tired mothers to
rest for an afternoon.
All suggestions for the con-
tinuation of the program_after
September first will be con-
sidered.
We will attempt to find
young leaders in the com-
munity and enlist their help in
program directing and involve
thein in leadership courses as
well.
The project and recreation
director will attempt to set up a
permanent youth counsel in
Goderich.
This counsel should
hopefully lead to a permanent
youth -adult organization.
We will attempt to locate a
center for this organization and
suggest' variot s methods of
financing as well as a definite
structure.
