train finished in second place
in the Huron -Perth league as
the result Of a win and a tie in
the last two games in their
schedule.
On Tuesday, at borne, the
Vikings defeated lxeter 3-1.
Thursday in Stra ford, the
team tied Stratford
Central 2-2.
Against Exeter, goals by'
Dave M'cIvor and Pete Teichert
'gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead at
halftime.
The Goderich and District Collegiate Junior Soccer Team
captured the Huron-Perth,Junior title for the 1973 season
with an unbeaten record and were honored at a special
assembly Monday morning at which they received their
trophy. Left to right, the team members are.: back, Kevin

shall, Al Worgan, Grant Shelton, Rob McIntyre, Jed Dejong

put the ball across the net and
it deflected off an Exeter
detender's head into the net.
Larry Donnelly upped the
score to 3-0 on a fine goal on a
cross -pass from "Joe -Joe" Watt
on the right wing twenty
minutes into the second half.
Casey Wildgen lost,his shut-
out with only two minutes to go
when an uncleared loose ball
dribbled o•'er the goal line. Al

In their final game the
Vikings fell behind when Strat-
ford scored at the two minute
mark, but the Vikings tied it at
the twenty-three minute mark
when Jim Watt's shot dropped
into the net just over the out-
stretched arms of the Stratford
goaltender.
Stratford went ahead almost
the Exeter goal -
immediately with another goal
within the next minute of play.
Brian MacKenzie got the
equalizer for'the Vikings before
the end of the half.
There was no scoring in the
secondshalf despite Stratford's
loss of a player through ejec-
tion from the game. The five -
four defence set up by the
Stratford team seemed to baffle
the Vikings offensive thrust.

Coach Phil Bugler's squad
nailed doyen this honor with a
2.1 victory over Stratford Cen-
tral in Stratford last Thursday.

Gisderich Power Squadron
held its graduation ceremonies
and change of watch for 1973-
74 at a well -attended function
at the White Carnation,
Holmesville, on Friday evening,
June 1.
The Goderich unit is+ one of
425 squadrons of Canadian
Power Squadrons,' a nationwide
safe -boating organization with
15,000 members and associates
from coast to coast. The local
squadron serves all Huron
County and poi -tions of Bruce
and Lambton Counties.

DIC Hallatt stressed the role of
Canadian Power Squa runs in
promoting "safe boating
through education" from' coast
to coast in Canada. He em-
phasized that the men and
women of the organization are
dedicated to the establishment
of a high standard of skill in
handling. of small boats, nth
power and sail.
Mrs. Peggy- Menzies and
David Gornall replied in behalf
of the graduates and presented
appropriate gifts to the two in-
structors of the boating course:

Vikings played an aggressive,
defensive ball -control game,
with the whole team doing
Ttielr part in protecting t}reir
one goal lead. Conlon was
especially effective. Iaiin Lam-
bert came within inches of ad-
ding to'the Viking lead on two
occasions.
Stratford. Central rpissed a
chance to tie the game on .a
penalty kick in. the last minute
of the game, when M.V.P. Ron
Sowerby made a fine save.
At a special assembly the Goderich and District Collegiate
institute honored lit Junior Soccer mem, who captured the
Huron Perth title, and the most valuable, players on both
teams. In a vote by the team members and the coaches Pete
Tigert, left, and Ron Sowerby were selected as the players
contributing the most to their teams. They received the Most

TOWN OF GODERICH
• r ch Town Council has been forced to Increase
tax rate by approximately 20 mills over the 1972
rat every effort has been made to curtail expen-
ditur o remain consistent with the local rats of 1972.
T 73 Provincial Budget provides the Town of
Goderich with approximately 9135,000 grant under the
new tax sharing plan. This Is partly In lieu of the old
mining grant which In 1970 waif 9138,900, reduced in
1971 to 982,711 and $57,992 -in 1972.
Godbrich's, share of the 1973 Education cost its In
creased by 971,000 over 1972.
The 1972 Education and 'County requisitions were
further reduced by Council from a deferred credit of
998,882. This covered the Education and County tax
rate considerably below the County average.
In 1973 there are no deterred credits, and with an in-
creeei of 971,000 on education costs the two factors
represent a mill rate increase of appro*Ihtately 19.74
mills over 1972 rates to pubNc school residential sup-
porters.
