Huron.hoisteinclub
tours Wpterloo farms
Last week the Huron County
Holstein Club spent a day
visiting five different dairy
farms in Waterloo County. The
farms included Ebydale Farms
owned by Floyd and Daryll
Eby," New Dundee; Ebvholme
Farms owned by Cllrence,
Brian and Dori Eby, Ayr;
Meadow Lee Farms owned by
.R.M. Perrin & Sons, Roseville;
Beckhaven Farms owned. by
Don Becker, Roseville; and
Friedhaven Farni owned by
Howard Fried & Son, New
Dundee.
All five farms are outstan-
ding for both milk production
and type. Most Huron County
Club members echoed the sen-
timents of their secretary, Don
Watson, Clinton, whet' he ex-
pressed appreciation to Don
Becker by saying, "We saw a
lot of good cattle today. It
should give us a few ideas when
we look at our own cows."
In general, all farms visited
had a high degree of
management, wit, two or more
people working full-time to care
for 40-50 milking cows and
another 40-50 young cattle.
Every farm used tie -stanchions
and either full -pipe -line
systems or dumping stations to
carry milk from the barn to the
milkhouse. Examples of how to
handle top -producing herds
were given at Beckhaven
Farms, Friedhaven Farm, and
Meadow Lee Farms, who com-
pete for the top production
herds in the county year after
year. Their composite herd
averages are near 160 meaning
that the average milk produc-
tion is over 16,000 pounds.
Examples of cattle prominent
in both the exhibitor's ring and
milk production were seen at
Ebydale and Ebvholme farms.
Many cattle from both herds
have been show winners at
n,ajor shows.
The Huron County Holstein
Club was accompanied by field -
men Gordon Bell, St. Mary s ,
and Joe Snyder, EImira. •

County approves- UDIRA
study at '110,450 cost
BY SHIRLEY J. KELLER
A pilot project in Huron
County to cost $110,450 was
given approval at last Thur-
sday's session of County Coun-
cil.
The study of Urban Develop-
ment in Rural Areas will be
financed on a cost sharing basis
with the Province of Ontario
paying 80 percent ,and the
County of Huron 20 percent.
It will look at the desirability
and effects of non-farm
development in rural areas and
is the first of its kind in On-
tario.
The tax review committee
comprised of Chairman Charles
Thomas, Gerry Ginn, Cecil
Desjardine, Joe Kerr, Deb
Shewfelt, Frank Cook and War-
den Roy Pattison is meeting
regularly now. Plans are to
make recommendations based
On the. findings of the commit-
tee in the field of welfire,
library and health.
"The committee proposes to
detail a ,comparison in -costs
between population basis ver-
sus assessment basis for these
three mentioned services,"
reported Thomas.
During the brief discussion,
Reeve Anson McKinley of
Stanley Township applauded
the recent provincial budget
which gave a 50 percent tax
rebate to farmers but deplored
the resource equalization grant
which "treats ,,the land as a,J
taxable resource to be
;equalized".
"A lot of strange formulas
will come out of Toronto in the
next couple of years," predicted
John Berry, clerk -treasurer.
The county is giving a grant
of $1,000 to the Victorian Or-
der of Nurses whose services
are now available county -wide.
This grant carries with it a con-
dition, however, that the VON
does not "solicit funds from the
local municipalities in Huron
County".
University, of Western On-
tario scholarships of $100 each
were awarded to Miss Terri
Louise Paul, R R 1 Kirkton
and Donald Thomas Jolly.
Exeter. As well, a, $100

trip to Ottawa and area by Mr.
and Mrs. Earl Cooper of our
local Golden Gate Club the last
week of May, I thought it was
interesting that Guelph district,
Rockwood, Senior Citizens
should choose Goderich for a
tour this Friday, June 8.
There will be over 8U of these
spritely oldsters who will seek
out every nook and crannie of
our marvelous museum, visit
the Harbour and all the "Look-
outs" and the many interesting
spots about our fine Town.
The local seniors - about
twelve or fifteen of them - have
taken on the provision of the
luncheon and hope to take in
the tour also.
Chances are that many of
them will be surprised to see
y y,
the great changes in their home
town in the last ten years that
have taken place almost right
under their noses.
There are many things plan-
ned for Goderich Summer
Festival and those of you who
have art or crafts to show and
sell - make sure you have
marked down the date July 26,
27 and 28 for SURE.
