CARD OF THANKS Pictured, left to right, are Douglas Miller, holding the first Iamb which is about 12 weeks old now; the ewe which produced the unusual occurrence and Lynn Miller, holding the two new- born Iambs. Ewe surprises everyone "A very rare occurrence" is putting it mildly. Most observers feel that it is an impossibility but Doug Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Miller of St. Helens, read of the same -thing happening a number of years ago at Guelph. At that time the story received national prominence ih a farm paper. The normal gestation period for sheep is 150 days; but a ewe on the farm of Allan Miller, 12th concession of West Wawanosh, delivered a lamb on February 1st and 76 days later, on Wednesday, April 18th, again gave birth this time to twin lambs. At the time of the birth of the twin lambs, the ewe was still feeding the big lamb which they immediately weaned. At the time of the second birth, the ewe provided about half a fresh milk supply with the other half dry from raising the first lamb. First reactions to this oc- currence are that there must have been a mixup, and this is a natural reaction, but the Miller family, who have been in the business of sheep raising for many years, have the animals all tagged and recorded and the unusual occurrence is a fact, and certainly must be recorded in the oddities of_nature. The brief deals with the sub- ject of flood damage -along the Great Lakes Shorelines. At this point, especially in Goderich, the report is for "information only", but in the event that some ratepayers on the lakefront in Goderich or neigh- boring townships believe they have legitimate claims, the - brief is herewith published. "This statement broadens Provincial Government support to municipalities and in- dividuals affected by flood damage. "In the first place the Solicitor General has been em- powered to call upon the Ar- med Forces if there is any threat to life. "Provision woul'd be made for inspectors to assess the need for the work requested and ap- prove the protective measures pt4oposed. In addition the'v would assure the compatibility of the work with neighbouring properties and would inspect and certify the completed work. Initial ,funding of this program will amount to 50 million dollars. "The third program involves physical assistance. The system used in the Ontario Seasonal Employment Program to .remove dead elms will be ap- plied to the current situation. Through the Ministry of Tran- sportation and Com- munications labour will be recruited to fin and place sand- bags as support for action being taken by municipalities in specific areas. "In addition trucks sr -d drivers of the Ministries of Transportation and Com- munications and Natural Resources will be supplied wherever available to assist municipalities in the erection of 'protective works or the repair of existing works. "To implement this program, the Great Lakes shoreline has been divided -into specific sec- tors as shown on the accom- panying map. In each sector there .is a person designated to provide liaison with .the municipalities in that area. The Sector Coordinator will have the assistance of a consulting _engineer and the combined ex- pertise of the Ministries of Transportation and Com- munications and Natural Resources in making decisions about the type of work which might prove effective. "The provincial Working Group will- continue to coor- dinate the overall operation, but it is hoped that the decen- tralization of decision-making will provide you .with quicker decisions on your local problems," writes ,J.
