Popular religious enthusiasm
gives birth to a series of pro-
foundly significant sacred plays,
festivals and rites. Sometimes
the people repeat sacred plays
from medieval times, handed
down intact, and still living on
in this dramatic demonstration
of simple faith. Sometimes it
shows itself in outbursts of re-
ligious fervour and penitence
at some celebrated sanctuary,
or at those festivals in honer of
patron saints which transfigure
a whole countryside first with
religious rites and then with
jubilant feasting.
