ROUND AND £OUT wires MARTHA
How many letters do you get
from someone in Hospital?
Well, here I am again, flat on
my back trying to write a few
lines. A week ago- out of a clear
blue sky - a terrific pain hit niy
hip and travelled down to my
heel - just a screaming pain -
and most upsetting because it
came :.without kerning.
You• might as well forget
about a doctor on Sunday and
nowadays without an appoint=
ment you are left to sit and
wait your turn. So, Monday I
sat it out and got orders for the
hospital and X rays.
I just couldn't go
away - I had a hair appoint --
merit - and you wouldn't dare
miss THAT' 4- •
Also the BETA STIGMA PHI
Sorority very special Ritual of
Jewels was coming up and with
eight pledges you - or at least, I
- had to be there. So I suffered
it out.
The pain pills just weren't ef-
fective - but how bad would it
have been if I hadn't had
them? •
I dashed around doing the
many little jobs I had lined up -
housework is always at the end
of the line; like a necessary
evil- or something. Anyway I
did "a lot of hurrying, a lot of
groaning and a lot of cussin'.
Thursday afternoon X-rays
and "how did you injure your
back?" I could only say - I
hadn't. So now whets hap-
pened?
Altho' I claim to be very
healthy -I've been in and out
of hospital so often that I know
so many of the nurses and
hospital people, it is like) old
home week - never a dull
moment. That evening I lear-
ned a disk or pad or whatever -
had disintegrated - or
something hc,rrible like that
and my pain was from the
nerve being pinched in the vice
of .my 'vertebrae.
in right
With all the medical terms
this is all it has boded down to
for my numbed brain - So I
could be misquoting them, but
whatever - it is most painful
and I'm SCARED.
When I look around me • I
feel ashamed that I could be so
miserable when there is so
much suffering and agony we
hear nothing about.
An old..friend (Mrs. Chas.)
Magpie McCabe was expecting
me to share her room. "Heard
you were coming" she said.
Marne has been very very ill for
a long time now, but she
.- seemed to be quite perky and
announced she was going home.
«'e certainly hope this, is her -
big change to recovery.I soon had a new -room mete,
Mrs. Ruth Orr - a dear old soul
- who had become over tired
and had a scare - but after
resting in bed aN day .felt she
was ok now and should go
home.
Her daughter Elva - with
chirpings from the nurses and
ME convinced her she should
stay a little longer. Now I cars
understand why she was
restless - she is a busy, busy
lady. She has so many in-
teresting hobbies I was just
amazed. She has so many.
She , is an ardent -stamp
collector. Started when she was
a little girl, now in her eighties
she should have - a terrific
collection. She„„seems to know
all the things MAI should know
about these tiny bits of paper -
altho' all are apparently not
paper - there are some linen,
etc. - even metal.
-I hope to learn more about
this hobby as I have tried to
save all the interesting ones I
come across- but they just get
pushed into an envelope and
stuck away in a drawer. I hear
that' I was, smart not packing
them` carefully away in

You learn something every
day - and a good thing too -
„since the 'More you learn the
more you discover your
ignorance-" and I have a great
ignorance of everything.
In my rush last week I made
up only three "chimney pots"
and after attaching flaps on
one end - to help hold them
upright on the chimney, 1
hadn't time to take them down
to Ruth so. left them at the door
of "The Barn". Standing
beside the garbage cans nearby,
they just looked -like more r gar—
bage - but they meant a few Y
hours of fuss and mess - so I
hope someone found them - or
recognized them.
It meant Ruth was left to
make up several more but Ruth
learns quickly and she is a very
conscientious little lady. Ac-
tually Ruth Leonard is a big
asset to Little Theatre and they
are lucky she has an inquiring
mind and willing hands.
By the way, the chimney pots
go atop the chimneys that ap-
pear in some of the "Mary Pop-
pins bit of the "Spring 'Tonic"
performance this weekend. I
know this to he a very wonder-
ful musical so hope you don't
miss it.
Hope I can make it, too.

TUES., MAY 8 AT 8:00 P.M.
S. A. Kerr, vice-president and
secretary of the company,
speaking to shareholders at the
annual general meeting in the
absence of T.N. Beaupre, chair-
man and president, said the
figures appeared to confirm
that the,outlook for Domtar is
encouraging. Improved finan-
cial results were expected to,be
achieved in 1973. However,
there were several known fac-
tors which could materially af-
fect earnings during the rest of
the year. Among these were
labor „negotiations and the sup-
ply of wood fibre.
"All our primary pulp and
paper mills will be engaged in
negotiations at the end of this
month," Mr. Kerr said. "Union
demands are being submitted
currently and, on the surface at
least, show little recognition for
the economic problems being
faced by most segments of the
pulp and paper industry.
'The combinations of high
union expectations, continuing
inflationary pressures in the
economy and the need to im-
prove return on investment,
which still remains inadequate,
point to difficult bargaining
during the -balance of 1973."
-Concerning the wood fiebre
situation, Mr. Kerr said it has
been critical at several of the
company's pulp and paper
mills since the fall of 1972 and
"although. it appears at this
moment that no mill will be
forced to close for lack of fibre
during the critical spring break-
up period, we are viewing the
balance of 1973 with some con-
cern.
"There is a shortage of wood
in many areas of Eastern
Canada caused by a scarcity of
qualified woodsworkers, the
diversion of much purchased
wood to sawmills and inter-
national competition for all
forms of wood fibre," he said .
"This is all aggravated by a
general upswing in the demand
for this raw material."
Mary Wilkin's "Christmas
Edition 1903" will appear in
week five followed the next
week by Kevin Cox's look at
"Advertising as a Mirror of the
times".
"Fashion 1903" will be
looked at by Anne Hopkinson
in week seven with "Patent
Medicine Advertising • 1903"
by Catherine Russell published
in week eight.
Janice Westlake's article on
"New Garment Factory for
Goderich" will wrap the series
up.
The articles were written by
members of the 1971-72 Grade
13 class at G.D.C.I.
