At press time, the Philadelphia Flyers faced the unenviable task
of defeating the Montreal Canadiens three straight times to win
their semi-final series.
For some mysterious reason, the Flyers have completely
changed their style, of play this series and the results have been
disastrous. The Flyers played .500 hockey on the regular son
with Montreal by playing a rough -tough, intimidation tv7 e iraThe
but in the play-offs they have been playing a skating game and we
all know you can't skate with Montreal) •
The first game, won by the Flyers - was decided on the "hitting,"
that wasn't there. Montreal was always looking over their
shoulder for a Flyer to ram therm and they made many bad passes
and mistakes. So the Flyers"have changed their'successful style for
some reason in the playoffs and it has hurt them dearly.
A few notes about the series: Dryden has to be the key figure (as
he usually is with' Montreal). He seems, to throw a mystical
blanket over the net because even when some guy like Gary Dor-
' rrhoeter knocks him down, -he still manages to make the save..
Montreal defencemen had better watch their sprawling tactics
to .block shots - Philly isn't faking then) at all but in the next
series. guys like Mikita and Martin will be putting them up in the
front row with head faces and shifts if the Chicago scouts have
been watching 'Boy, I never realized how lucky I was to watch
Bob Coldham as a commentator until this last week or so. Dick Ir-
vin has driven, me buggy with his °astute" observations and
"biased", "slanted" and "superficial" comments. Need I say
more?.,..,,,[.,.bad to chuckle when I read that the N.H.L. office was
. moving the Chicago -New York game No.5 to Tuesday to allow the
"A" series to catch up. That is so "cranny," it stinks.
Its obvious that the N.H.L. has to provide so many- Sunday
games for the N.B.C. network and by moving_the Chicago series
five days ahead, they were hoping to get another Sunday game in
the senr4-finals - but no, they would never be honest with the
public and come out and say that.'
And that baloney about catching up - what if the Chicago series
ends tonight and the Philly series goes seven games? Then the
Black Hawks would have to wait another week to play again! It
just makes nie mad - and even the scoreboard on Sunday's game
w.as the NBC scoreboard - I figure it will be 4 years at the most
before the states COMPLETELY monopolizes hockey and we'll be
lucky to see any games at all' -

It' seems the Russians had such an easy time at the "Amateur"
championships this year, they want back at the big boys. in the
N. L - this time they'll play when we want, by our rules, and
with OCR referees.
