APtilt. 12, 197 3 A matter of to -ordination 411111/111111111111141111111116 Town recreation director gets programs underway A question was- raised at the town council sleeting last Thursday as to the duties of Recreat ton Director' Mike Dymond. Dynlond has corse under isolated cases of criticism ►-' during the past few weeks. He agreed with the Signal -Star that the people of Goderich should be made fully aware of What he was, hired to do and how he is carrying out these duties. By definition, .'Recreation is an act or experience selected b\ the Individual during his leisure tune, to sleet a personal want or c1..S1 ie primarily for his own satisfaction." Thus recreation programs need not always he athletic or physical. An important part of the recreation director's job is to act as a communication device between the people of the com- munity and the recreation com- mittee. It is important to adjust to a community and become,., o oriented to it that the director will instinctively know what that community needs to fill the gaps left by leisure hours. A student in the Recreation Director's course at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Gary Lounsbury has completed his first year and stated that there are two major parts to recreation in the community. First there must be coin- munity involvement Lounsbury said. A recreation program should involve every type of person of every age. WELCOME SERVICE would like to call on you with "housewarming gifts" and in- formation about your new location The Hostess will be glad to arrange your subscrip- tion to the Signal -Star Coll her at 524-9525 econdly Lounsbury noted, the director 1s responsible for setting up these programs but is not necessarily directly in- volved in it. He must however, attempt to get people to run their own program under his guidance. Currently Dymond is working on several projects which when completed will aid in making Goderich a much More interesting place to live. "l'he judo :club is now 0 1lu cram of , recreation and altfilltiedi it is still under the direction of Helmut Krohnler, it will become 0 recreation coulr►Litt e program in ,the fall. The majorette program which starte(1, some tune ago, has increased in numbers. Most of the administrmion chores have been taken from the shoulders of the person ((induc- ting the program slaking it much smoother to operate. l)vipond is negotiating and working very closely with the local sailing club to plan and provide lessons in instruction for those in Goderich interested 1►1 sailing. A great deal of the administration (,f such 0 program will be ,done through the recreation committee. The development of 0 Huron wide soccer association has been accomplished which when in full operation will provide a wide area of excellent conl- Petition fo.r local soccer clubs and bring the standard of soc- cer up immensely in the area. A recreational fitness and ac- tivity program for then is func- tioning now but still in the for- mation stages, will be developed further and offered as an organized program 111 the fall. Yoga classes have started with a small interest and will he. properly advertised shortly making it available to al! in- terested people. Dymond is also working with youth -groups in the areas of ac- tivities and instigating courses of leadership development for the members of such youth vroups. He is responsible for the development of- hlaygr- )und ac- tivity areas in four locations for this summer; the planning of y programs for these areas 410(1 1 tic hiring and direction of staff and their training. The director must also look after his office set-up, record keeping, report making providing an inforh►ation • ser- vice from that office, the preparations and control of total departmental budget with an estimated grows expenditure for 197:1 of $138,000., and secretarial services to groups that request it. There is an interest in' minor softball, junior basketball, girls softball, ladies softball, for- illation of an art society, a fit- ness .progratii for women,, day camping for kids in the sum- mer, track and field club, model airplane club and other programs. According to 1)yrnond, he is available anytime to talk to anybody about recreational program interests. If sufficient interest is shown in any type^(of program, he will do his best to get it oft the ground.
