Goderich Sailing Club
beginning season soon
The 1973 season of marine
activity from Goderich Harbor
.got off to an early start due to a
mild winter and an earlier tan
usual spring. Salt freighters
began ptvThg the waters of the
local harbor and Lake Huron
nearly three weeks ahead of
schedule and now the Goderich
Sailing Club are beginning to
make their plans for a summer
on the water.
This- Saturday' the first •club
activity of the new season will
be held at_ the Maitland Golf
and Country Club. Beginning
at 2:30 p.m. members, and
those interested in becoming
club members for the new
season, are invited to attend a
lecture orethe rules of sail
racing.
ezr The local yacht club has held
weekly competition for some
time now but organizers felt
discussion of racing rules with
those having a deep knowledge
of sailing competition would he
beneficial to both new members
and those who have taken part
in club races over the years.
This evening Dr. Donald
Salter will speak to sailing en-
thusiasts at the Goderich and
District Collegiate Institute
cafeteria regarding his trans
Atlantic• -sailing adventure.
Dr. Salter is a professor at.
the University of Waterloo. The
meeting is set to get underway
at 8:00 p.m. and is open to the
public.
During the upcoming season
the local club will host three
major regattas- in addition to
their regular club competitions.
. The first will be held June 16
when the Canada. Cup race, in-
volving the local club; Bayfield
and Grand Bend, is to be
hosted locally. The race is'
hosted each year by the club
who won the race the previous
Year and in 1972 Ted Lane
brought home the honors for
Goderich. This will be the first
year Goderich has been the
scene for the Canada Cup.
The' third annual Fireball
Regatta will be held July 21
and 22. This event consists of a
series of three races over a two
day period with the winner
decided on the basis of his two
best times;
. August 25 will see the second
annual Dominion ` Road
Machinery Regatta which is
sponsored by the local DRMCo
'Company.
The regular club racing,
season will start May 6 this
year with an extra race each
week over last year. Each Sun-
day morning the club will race
its full course as usual but
organizers hope this year to
add a shorter race Wednesday
evenings'to put more, activity

been under discussion for some

large the program should be in
its first year."/In the near
future the organizers hope to
hold a pre registration in order
to get an idea of how much in-
terest there is in the program.
Recently the Goderich Yacht
Club' received a donation of
four "Mini -macs", a small day
sailer, for use in the instruction
program and organizers hope
that another three to four small
boats will be made available to
the program through personal
loans.
%The sailing program will be
aimed for the most part at
young people but Mr. Dymond
suggests that anyone interested
in the classes would be more'
than welcome.
Instructors are available,
some:.from within Goderich and
some from outside, and it is
hoped the. program will get un-
derway sometime in June.
COUNTRY CLUB
After months of preparation,
the Bennriller Foresters and
their ladies certainly did them-
selves -proud- with the Curling
Championships held here last
week. The esprit de corps
among this group was
something to behold.
Congratulations to these
dedicated men and women for
bringing this honor to
Goderich.
Since the event is reported in
the Signal -Star this week, 1
shall not go. into detail.
The Stan Stokes Trophy emblematic of "most sportsmanlike conduct by a team" was
presented' to the Blyth entry by Stan 6tokes. Receiving the trophy is Blyth captain Dale
Whitfield. The presentation took place at Young Canada Week.

As the N.H.L. playoffs opened yesterday, I felt I should look
back to .my predictions frorij October 12, 1972- for the final stan-
dings and see how I did. U,nfortunatety,„I,,didn't fare..tpo well, in _
the Eastern Division as far as -the standings go - I only correctly
placed Vancouver and N.Y. Islanders (big deal eh?) - however, I .
did select three of the four teams that did make the playoffs. In
The West; I as a little more successful. I picked the four teams
that would Make the playoffs (except that I had Philadelphia
picked for fourth and not second). Similarl:v, I had Pittsburgh
chosen for fifth. but the Atlanta Flames and their great freshman
year threw off the remainder of my picks for the Western Division.
Here's how my playoff predictions go. Montreal will defeat Buf-
falo in 5 games. Boston will win in 6 games over New„York.
Chicago will heat St- Louis in 5 games and Philadelphia will take
6 to dispose of Minnesota. Let's see how these choices go before I
go any farther.
The Goderich Sailors trail Petrolia "Selects" :3-17in games but
the Sailors certainly aren't giving up the ship yef. A noted fan of
the team, . one- Bill' Kirkey told me that the Sailor will take it.
We hope so -Bill.
Ice -Chips: I still maintain my prediction of early January .that
Red Kelly will be in Toronto for next season. -John McClellan's
health and the Leafs; iioor showing in '72 will be the reasons for
the switch./..Now that the "Ontario Nationals" are playing out of
Toronto, maybe the Leafs will find it a little hardej to Sell all their
season tickets....
Leafs finished the season as "spoilers" heating Detroit G-4 last
Thursday and that defeat shelved the Wings. They then beat
Boston 7-3 and tied the Black .Hawks 4--4. in Chicago Espo
won the Art Ross Trophy for the leading point-scorer....Dryden,
Masse and Thomas won the Vezina see you next week.

However, I would be remiss if I
failed to mention that the
Southern Ontario ladies' rink,
namely, Eileen Bowman, skip,
Betty Moore, Eleanor Fisher
and Millie Lobb provided the
spectators with some of the
most competitive and exciting
games of the series. The
Goderich rink tied with
Manitoba for second place. and

Awards Night, tonight begin-
ning with cocktails at 6 p.m.
The day has been, when in
spring, a young man's fancy
turned to love -how times have
changed!
Now come spring, everyone's
fancy turns to golf!! Charlie is
as busy as a bee getting the
course in readiness for the
eager beavers -and while
Charlie can do almost
anything -he cannot. rush
nature.
Therefore, members are
respectfully requested to steer
clear of the golf greens and
please keep the canines off the
course. All the time and effort
being put into the preparation
of the course will be in vain
unless we show a healthy
respect for the tender young
shoots.
While the response to the
tennis ad was ,encouraging, the
Board of Directors feel that
more interest wilh, have to be
shown to warrant the expense
of putting in tennis courts. So
the tennis coupon will appear
in the S.S. for the next two
weeks and we ask you to fill in
and return it to us if you have
not already done so.
