Needs increase
to maintain
milk supplies
"Industrial milk shippers will
welcome the tit► -cent -a -
hundredweight • pay increase
announced yesterday ;ts part of
the federal government's 1973
dairy policy," says dairyman
Keith Matthie. Matthie, of
Brockville, is vire-president of
the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture.
The price increase .was
demanded by the Canadian
Federation of Agriculture and
the Dairy Fanners of ('ansilo.
"It will be made up of a com-
bination of modest increases in
cheese, hutter and skim milk
powder prices, plus '_'l) cents a
hundredweight from .the
Canadian Dairy ('omnlissiort,"
said Matthie.
Milk producer Delmer B
nett of Foresters Falls, sa
the increase was needed t
combat rising costs.
"Labour, fertilizer,
petroleum, hydro, grain,
protein, and other production
costs have not just climbed. hut
jumped, in recent months,''
says Bennett.
"Industrial shippers have not
had a significant increase si"hce
late in 1971. Without this in-
crease, there can„ be no doubt
that milk supplies would have
been considerably less" than
market requirements,;' insists
Bennett.
